'Housewives' Filipino joke draws ire

I thought "you've got to be kidding me" half a dozen times reading through the article. I've never seen the show and don't care about it, but it makes me mad how fast ABC caved to the pressure, how apologetic they're being, and that they're considering censoring it in the future. It sets a dangerous precedent (or rather, it continues to ingrain the pattern of self-censorship for the sake of peoples' feelings that is already taking hold).

And the funny thing is, he probably sits next to a guy taking drive-thru orders for a McDonalds.

The show's mistake was it singled out the Philippines for no apparent reason. I don't watch the show but I'm assuming that the character that said it was a female dog, and an off color coment like that fits in well w/ her character.

Yea the comment is a little off color, but you're watching a show called "desperate housewives", not "7th heaven".

Then, when people make a joke about this thing, we take it way out of proportion and sue the person for millions. It's fool proof. But I need your help. We need numbers to make this work. (lots of numbers, convert your friends and family into it too.) Oh, and I need to think of and idea that's not overly ludicrous but still criticized. Noel Edmunds can be our God, he get's the crap ripped out of him all the time. Although we'd be better off picking someone American... More likely they'll get the piss taken out of them then... any ideas?

I just thought. We Brits take the mick out of Americans on TV and I often see jokes at our expence on American shows, it really doesn't bother me at all - not one teeny bit. Funny thing is we do have bad teeth for the most part, and a lot of Americans are fat so at least some of it's based on truth.

Is that what the fillipino's are pissed at? That it was unfounded? 'Cause I don't like tea and I don't have a posh accent, we don't wordhip the royal family, or the Beckhams and hell, half of us aren't fans of the US. So many of the stereotyped jokes about us are unfounded too.. should we complain and sue?

PS. I know I totally contradicted myself but I was thinkning of new points as I went and decided to show both sides of the arguement.

i think all shows should just put a simple disclaimer in their credits that reads

"The preceding programs was for ENTERTAINMENT purposed only. We sincerely apologize for any offense any one of the 100,000 or so watch groups may feel like feigning this week. It will happen again."

that way you get all the apologizing out of the way and we can just get on with our lives...

there's 2 issues I have with this arguement.

1. It's stupid

2. There have been so many worse things on shows like family guy,south park,etc...

Another fine example of political correctness thats got out of hand, clearly that piece of the script was mean't as a joke and not to be taken seriously. But as seems to be the current trend in the world, if you belong to a minority and anything negative is said about it then everyone goes up in arms about it.

Then again its a valid question being raised in the script aswell, a lot of people want to make sure their doctor is fully qualified or perhaps don't want a philipino doctor, did they ever think about that before they screamed racism and prejudice? i doubt it...

Well then, start a petition to leave it uncensored.

Bottom line is that it's not YOUR show. You don't have a right to see it uncensored any more than the complainers have a right to see it censored. Either way, they're gonna piss off somebody.

Bty the way, the other day I was at a restaurant having dinner with my friends when I thought of a really dirty joke that fit the conversation. But I didn't tell it because there were kids sitting at the table next to us. OMG, what have I done?! I self-centered myself in order to avoid offending people, and at the expense of my friends who didn't get to hear the joke! Oh no!

Just out of curiosity, where do you draw the line at which point self-censorship is acceptable? Should I go around cussing in public?
