I go to work and college. I get around 30-35 hours of work a week then go full time at college. I realized that I need to sleep just 4 hours a night so that I can get some extra time to study. Its been working with me because I can stay awake good till I start work. When I start work, I dont get sleepy at all because it keeps me busy. When I come home from work I just go to sleep. I dont go home either on the days I work, so its hard to feel like I can just lay down and sleep.

Any of you just sleep 4 hours a day? How was it like for you?

Sometimes I'm good with 4 hours, sometimes not. But I've had a sleeping problem all my life though. I literally hate sleeping at night. Been a problem since I was a baby.

I think it depends on what you do on that day. If I got work and college that day, its easy to just keep awake. If I got no college or school that day, just me sitting at home, I have to fight the urge to not just lay in bed.

I sleep on average 5 hours a night and then nap during the day for 1-3 hours *if I have the time). There's no good reason my schedule is like this, I just can't fall asleep unless I'm really tired. Unfortunately for me my free time keeps me awake and school/work is what puts me in a sleeping mood.

I usually sleep around 6 hours. I wouldn' t have a problem with 4 hours either but doing it every single day could be unhealthy for you in the long run.

8 hours on a regular schedule is often too much for me. I was averaging around 4 - 5 hours of sleep when working full time.

I have chronic insomnia. Sometimes it's not that bad, but it will always be there. When it's active, I'll be awake for days on end and when I do get to sleep, it's maybe 2-3 hours a day and not straight through. Other times I'll sleep for a hour or so and wake up, lay there for a few hours till I get back to sleep again. It's not fun and I don't suggest keeping yourself awake if that's what you're doing. It leads to heart problems and mental problems. Sometimes I'll get lucky and sleeping pills will work, but since I've been taking sleeping pills for a few years (not every day for years), it only makes those problems more apparent. So basically, if you can sleep and are just keeping yourself awake....do it.

Some people only need 4-5 hours of sleep There's a gene mutation that allows them to operate on such little sleep, with no adverse health effects.

My roommate would constantly get 4-6 hours of sleep. He functioned fine, I have no idea how though.

I think I have a similar problem, some nights I just can't seem to sleep no matter what I do, which can be really aggravating. Also, much like you, I can never seem to fall asleep easily without getting anxiety until its dawn and the sun's starting to rise. Heh, might be a vampire-like trait. Also for sleep and anxiety conditions, my mind feels too unstable these days, its all messed up.

Scientists during large projects often only sleep several hours a day. Although they do it by small periodic naps throughout the day along with a protein high diet. Although I still like my 8 hours, I'd never willingly choose to only sleep 4.

Seems a little low. Personally, I feel a lot better with 6-8 hours of sleep a night. But there are those days when you are super busy and will only get a few hours.

I averaged about 4 hours a night in my junior and senior years of high school (my school has a notorious reputation with the amount of homework they give).  I could never consistently do that now.  I was tired all the time though and nodded off a lot in my more boring classes.

I like to keep a running total during the work week, and make up for it on the weekend.  Sometimes my job has me working until 3AM, then showing up at 7AM, which means about 3 hours of sleep.  So I will take a nap when I get home, then try to make up some sleep that night.

Then, when the weekend comes, I don't bother waking up by a specific time.

And may I ask what your major is at school? Unless it is something crazy difficult like premed or something, you might be working too hard.  4.0...3.0...doesn't really matter.

My average sleep is around seven to eight hours. Any less than that and I don't function nearly as well.

I would love to be able to only sleep four or less hours a night and be able to function properly. Too much time wasted on sleeping, IMO. Anyway, I sleep about six or eight hours a night.

At univeristy I did it regularly, sometimes in order to do well and enjoy myself I'd get up at about 5am get 2 hours of study in and then hit my classes, then maybe an hour or two before going out and enjoying myself, wasn't difficult with good exercise and diet, also lots of water, always needed water or I'd become a bit tired and hard to concentrate.

Definitely not healthy. I've been having from four to two hours of sleep during the night, and sometimes I complement that with two more hours in the afternoon. I feel like shit in the morning (curiously, sleeping four hours feels worse than sleeping two hours - probably something to do with the various cycles) - dizzy, woozy, etc. I don't intend to sustain this behaviour, but time's short these days :/.

I'm actually on a 4 hour sleep per night schedule as well. 4 hours of sleep on the weekdays, around 6-7 on the weekends. I'm a med school student and have classes Mon-Fri which start at 8am, so I usually sleep from 3-7. Mon-Wed are usually fine for me, but by Thurs I start to feel the effects and get pretty groggy/tired throughout the day. 2-3 cups of coffee a day usually gets me through though.

Yeah... this week alone, I only found time to sleep on Tuesday and Thursday night, for a total of about 7 hours.

Currently, I'm a full-time college professor, where I teach a minimum of 4 courses semester. Additionally, I'm also a full-time (evening, technically) law student, where I take a minimum of 9 hours of law per semester. This semester, for whatever reason, I thought it would be alright to develop and teach an advanced networking course (which I've never taught before) while taking Evidence -- which is probably the hardest course most will take while in law school. On top of all of that, I also own and operate my own consulting company, which admittedly, has been put on hold this semester.

Aside from my law classes, the single thing that's literally keeping me up at night is that advanced networking course. I keep telling myself (and my wife) that once it's done, it's "smooth sailing" as far as having to prepare for it in the future.

Jesus, you people are insane. I haven't heard of a gene mutation allowing you to sleep half as much, but I've heard many times that unhealthy sleeping schedules lower your lifespan. Even working through the night can take years off a person's life.

Like a few others have posted, I also have some form of chronic insomnia but it's mild most of the time. Pretty much all my life it has taken multiple hours of lying in bed to fall alseep, so it takes me 10 hours of bedtime just to get 6-8 hours of sleep.

I sadly need close to a full nights sleep to function.  I don't know if that's because that's what I've been used to, and so when I deviate from the norm I'm not used to it.  I feel like I used to function better on little sleep when I got little sleep more often.  Maybe it's something you kind of build up and get used to.

ROFL, on the radio I've heard of this thing called "shift work disorder" or something, which is apparently being drowsy and tired at work all the time. It's called go to bed earlier. There aren't enough facepalms in the world to facepalm that commercial.

I feel you.  I've recently developed a health issue that makes sleeping difficult, and I find that I no longer look forward to bed time.
