To all the older users of the site, what are some of your favorite memories? Share them here, time to reminisce. I made a similar topic 3 years ago, but in internet terms that's ancient history (lets be honest)

Some of mine:

Users being brought back due to popular vote

Dracula68 banning

Kane and Lynch controversy

Unions being removed

Dracula was banned?

Hmm, Airshocker being banned. There’s a bunch from System Wars like that huge porn suicide thread. So many people got banned in that.

- hitler and einstein not being from the same time period

-pc can’t do hd gaming

-what are zerg

Ooo, there was the hot butter incident.

Some mod was banned for an April Fool's joke (can't remember of it was spazz625x or something or solidruss) and like half OT either quit or suicided. People were really really pissed. Also, I remember I got banned because of suspension dodging since my cousin created an account on my computer while I was suspended. That was fun...

I remember when this board was bustling with life. So many recognizable users that no longer visit. This forum was one of the first online communities I ever visited so it felt great being a part of it. I also miss my conversations with some users, mostly in the Roll Call thread.

The good days were '05-'08. By 2010, this was a different board altogether.

Well I never join the boards until last year but I been following Gamespot since 2001 and would watch all the shows like On the Spot, Button mashing, Tournament TV ect... GS from 2001-2007 was not only my favorite time for GS but for gaming in general I miss that era alot gaming was simpler less greedy and more passionate devs.

Wow. Didn't expect anyone to bring that up. Must have been in 2008 or so.

Spazz got banned first. I think Solidruss were banned a few hours later or so. Spazz had to get off his high horse or something? :P

I think @JustPlainLucas could tell you more about it. I think after that incident, posting in a suicide thread qualified for banning right away.

Personally remember unions very well. System Wars union (I think) was one I frequented a lot. Ended up being the last leader there before unions were disbanded. Before that, VideoGameKing (or video_game_king) were the leader of it. He had the longest blogs.

Double_decker made the roll call threads active. And may have made some users obsessed with post count.

Apparently the period were the forums were the most active. No fun was allowed :P

Yeah, I actually remember that day. I came home from work, and the porn thread was somewhere around 700 posts in size. Weird gap of several hours where not a single mod was on (or just not checking SW and the que). I got peeved at the fact that everyone posting in there kept bumping, usually with a "WOOO HOO NO MODS" type of post, so I suggested to Alex Navarro at the time if I could suspend everyone that was in it, and he said go to town, so everyone who posted in that thread I suspended. Only the TC and anyone who added porn of their own were banned, though. (I don't remember anyone actually adding porn)

Also, I remember when they reset fastesttruck's post count and the meltdown he had afterward. God, I miss the unions and UCBs... One of the biggest mistakes GS made getting rid of them.

Gamespot's biggest mistake has to be revamping the site back in 2013 that nobody ask for. GS staff had their ego's so big, they hurt the site more and they lost over 1,000 users who enjoy coming to GS forums and reading the news. I was lurking on GS around 2011, I seen people come and go. Looking at OT front page, the same threads are over a week old, you normally see the same thread for only 1 day before it's in page 2.

Also, what happened to GazaAli? He made OT interesting to having a good discussion.

Was his post count actually reset? I more or less lost contact with him after awhile. He went online after I went to bed mostly.

I've had mine lowered by some 12K or so. Once or twice, don't remember. The forum changes here haven't always been nice to it :P I know fastest wanted the two post per minute limit gone. Or increased.

Well, if it wasn't reset, it was reduced dramatically. And I remember him blowing up over the post count limit. But man... if you could actually post more than twice in a minute, your ass was posting too much.

It was quite easy to hit that limit from time to time. Roll call in one tab and OT in another :P

Funny thing is, I always like coming into Teh_Funeral's threads when it involves this one girl he's so obese over lol. If GazaAli did made it to Denmark, then he already forgotten us in OT.

TehFuneral came across as suicidal in a lot of his threads. In fact his last thread was titled about committing suicide. I'm pretty sure he got banned for that.

The thing I remember most, my fondest memory, about Gamespot is that is used to be so active I never needed to go to System Wars or Political Gamers for a good conversation or debate.

That was the beginning of the end for these forums. The April Fool's Day Massace of 20-- (forgot the year) I call it. We lost a lot of great users, great contributors. Still enjoy these forums, though.

Other memories:

  • I remember when Gamespot was either independent, or not "as owned" by CNET and CBS as it is now.
  • Nothing against British people, but I also remember Gamespot before the British invasion (seems like half their staff are Brits now).
  • Gamespot used to be actual journalism instead of ads.
  • iirc Gamespot was either solely or primarily a PC resource for some time.

Hope he made it. I always like Ali, though he got a little nuts there towards the end.

Some others folks I miss:

Xaos, the gay Audi TT driving San Franciscan
Sajedene (she is still really active with MOBA).
many others...wish I could remember their names.

When this board had traffic of a lot of great users and generated plenty of discussion that was nearly impossible to keep up with.

Now some threads on the main page are weeks (or months) old...

Ha ha ha ha ah yeah, took me a moment but I do remember that thread. This happened when I was a frequent visitor of System Wars and I think I caught the tail end of it before it eventually was locked and hidden/deleted. Then a little while later, another user attempted to created a remix of that suicide thread that manage to get 10-20 post deep before it was eventually removed. Believe CaseyWagner was the one who brought the ban hammer to that thread...

Many of my favorite moments were already mentioned. I do miss the "You Laugh, You Lose" threads. The meltdown that happened when Jeff Gertsmann gave Zelda TP an 8.8 was EPIC, forced him to quit Gamespot and relocate lol. There are many more moments, mostly from watching banter between users back then, buuuuut just can't think of anything specific right now...

Omnislash used to be a mod... Maybe a decade ago or more. Sun_Tzu and GabuEx both had interesting posts usually to read. The Pianist was another user that comes to mind now.

It was probably 2007 or 2008, very shortly after Gerstmanngate. THAT was the beginning of the end. So many people left after his termination and even some mods stepped down over it, including me. Sadly, I couldn't keep my anger in check, so I was never able get my modship back when I tried to ask for it.

Nah, you're wrong on that one. Gerstmann didn't give a **** about what people thought of his reviews. What brought him down was the Kane and Lynch review where he gave the game a six. Eidos complained to the higher ups because they spent about 100-150 thousand on adds and some asshole CNET manager was afraid they'd lose more money so they let Gerstmann go. Made him sign an NDA and cost this site about half its readership, as well as forum readers. Never recovered since. Also shattered my aspirations of wanting to get hired by this place.

Yup, it was called Gerstmanngate. Management tried to say it wasn't over the Kane and Lynch review, but I don't remember the excuse they tried to give. But morale surrounding the rest of the editors was at an all-time low. The site lost other reviewers as well. Gerstmann and a few others went and formed Giant Bomb as a result of the fallout and a few years later, the NDA expired and Jeff was able to confirm that he was fired over the score. Edios was really pissed off that GS didn't receive their game well after they dumped 100-150k in advertising money.

GabuEx had the Chocobo avatar. I think Omni had a picture of himself towards the end. He runs (or used to) his own gaming site.

Getting legal residence for studying shouldn't be so difficult I imagine. Unless Denmark has way stricter rules than Norway, but I doubt it.

When games earned medals/ badges with each review such as spark plug (technically proficient graphics), black monster ( Great boss battles) etc. It was a good way to summarize a review score with these badges.

Theokoth's OT fanfiction.

Gabu-ex just generally being more intelligent than everyone.

Our resident police officer, Airshocker.

Our 10K post parties.

The post your picture threads like the collective facepalm thread.

Some other users like Omni-Slash and Sajedene (I wish she still discussed shit with people, but it's all about Twitch streaming on social media).

The April Fool's Spazz ban was like 50 pages long. Although that was the catalyst for Saje rage quitting. I kind of regret that joke happening (despite having nothing to do with it) because of the that outcome.

Also, what happened to GazaAli? He made OT interesting to having a good discussion.

Last I heard he was trying for...Denmark, I think? Never got any confirmation on whether he made it or not.

God I hope he did. Life in Gaza has gotta be fairly awful, and possibly fairly short.

When this board had traffic of a lot of great users and generated plenty of discussion that was nearly impossible to keep up with.

Now some threads on the main page are weeks (or months) old...

Yep. Used to be a great place to kill time. As for memories.....so many good people now gone.

@davillain-:

Had, maybe. I don’t think it’s even worth a lurk anymore.

I don’t plan to stick around long enough for it to matter
