This is good news, America is a good example of equality.

However I don't think any church should be forced by law to perform the ceromonies.

Just wait, it'll only be a week, and then New York will erupt in chaos. Because, gay marriage will cause society to break down right? :P

I know I should say something happy about the great decision that New York has made on this, but honestly the first thought that went through my head was, "If only Theokhoth could have lasted two more days!"

Why would they be? They're not forced to host the ceremony of anyone they don't want to now.

Sorry to be the party pooper, but it's not. It passed the assembly. It still needs to pass the Senate which could fail by one vote (32 votes are needed, 31 senators have said publicly that they will vote yes).

Same thing happened in 09, Assembly passed the bill, the Senate rejected it.

Or it's because they didn't vote at all. Liberals tend to be lazier when it comes to voting.

Can we please not get overly excited? The senate will vote tomorrow, at the earliest, and maybe next week. Currently, we only know 31 people will vote yes, meaning only 31 could vote yes. To make it legal, there needs to be 32 votes.....

No they aren't lazier. It just didn't pass. And CA swings wildly to the left. It wouldn't change anything even if that were the case.

One Republican who could be the 32nd vote says he'll vote in favor if there is a religious exception. In other words, if individual churches can say no to officiating/doing the marriage based on religious views. This seems reasonable to me.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves; the Senate now needs to approve it and then the governor needs to sign the bill; it's not legal just yet.

I agree, being both athiest and gay It would not be fair to force this on churches. While I don't agree with a lot of religious teachings I respect religion enough not to force them to act against doctrine.

I really hope this stands and then catches on in other locations. The fact that people care about and object to what others do in the privacy of their own life is baffling to me.
