Next week, my friend is bringing over an exchange student that is staying with him for a week, to see the bush (I live on a farm) and some native animals-all the usual stuff. Now, the problem is that the Japanese can get quite insulted about talk about WW2\whaling, etc and I don't want him to see my collections of WW2 books\games, etc. I'm also quite conservative. Whats worse is that me and my friend are going to impact on Australia for him-and I don't want him sending back bad reports home. What do you think, OT?

I think he is more likley to be offended that you think he will be offended by these things, people usualy let others be. In cases like this i can't see him doing anything or saying anything.

You should probably hide those things from him and welcome him and make him feel welcomed and comfortable.

We have had Japanese exchange students at our school several times, they are very friendly, apparently they dont understand sarcasm though, might want to avoid that just in case.

They don't. I have a Japanese exchange student who's been living in the house for 6 months and we have to explain the joke if the joke is sarcastic.

That's odd. Japanese I meet are often not the kind to be offended by world war 2. Often times even accepting that they had to get bombed. Well, I guess just lock it in a trunk or something.

Id also recommend that you avoid swearing a lot as from what i remember most of the time they are lighthearted and dont like to offend people, when teenagers in England or America learn a new language a lot of them try to find out swear words ect straight away. On the other hand the most offensive English word the exchange students at our school new was 'stupid'.

So basicly just try to be friendly and avoid anything that could be offensive or misinterpreted.

I have lived with a *** for six months now and I don't think you need to get that worried about him being offended my your WW books. It would be silly to hide them, its not unreasonable for you to be interested in the war.

Whenever I want something done, I just tell my roommate (in Chinese, since we are in China learning Chinese) Excuse me but I wasn't the one who started the war was I? He doesn't get offended or anything.

Japanese people really are very polite, I mean you could probably exploit this guy and make him do everything for you they are that polite (I know I did with my roomie for the first few months before he finally wised up) so don't worry things will be fine.
