What are some remakes you actually like?

For me I like

  • Assault on Precinct 13 2005
  • The Thing 2011, and yes I know the CGI effects aren't good but I still like it.
  • Dawn of the Dead 2004
  • Dredd 2012

Assault on Precinct 13 is a good one. The Thing from the 80's was itself a remake. So I choose that one and... Oh yeah! Casino Royale.

Seriously I don’t like any remakes better than their originals. Even if I saw the remake first I usually prefer the authenticity of sincerity of the original film.

Scarface

The Departed

The Thing (Carpenter)

The Fly

The Mummy (1999)

Plenty more I can't think of right now.

Is Dredd really a remake of the '90s movie? I thought it was an original story borrowing from The Raid. I've seen the 2012 one twice but never the '90s one.

Nope, Dredd isn't a remake, it's based off a British comic that's been around since the 80's. Unlike the Stallon movie that only really had the aesthetics and nothing else, it's much closer to the source materiel, Albeit lacking the black humor.

On topic -

  • The Fly
  • The Thing
  • Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

Yes, but the story is original, I take it. Like, there's not a comic in the series about him and his rookie partner being trapped in this skyscraper with Ma-Ma's goons.

Their are tons of stories about Dredd trapped. The comic is basically fascist police in a dystopian cyberpunk setting.

Ma-Ma is an original character, though she had her own spinoff comic.

Totally agree on those three. Goldblum Fly, Sutherland Snatchers, and Carpenter Thing are all better than their predecessors.

I'd add The Departed, although I also really liked the original. Ocean's Eleven is by most counts better than the original Rat Pack vanity project. Rick Moranis Little Shop is my favorite version. The US version of The Ring is IMHO a bit better than the Japanese version (something I almost never say about US remakes of asian horror films).

@Byshop: Yeah, the American Ring is kind of an anomaly in that regard.

On a somewhat related note, King of Monsters might be the best Godzilla.
