WASHINGTON — For the first time, American women have passed men in gaining advanced college degrees as well as bachelor's degrees, part of a trend that is helping redefine who goes off to work and who stays home with the kids.

Census figures released Tuesday highlight the latest education milestone for women, who began to exceed men in college enrollment in the early 1980s. The findings come amid record shares of women in the workplace and a steady decline in stay-at-home mothers.

Unemployment for men currently stands at 9.3 percent compared to 8.3 percent for women, who now make up half of the U.S. work force.

Story here.

Wow - this could turn into a repeat of World War II history, when women were holding down the workforce in the U.S.:o

Nope, men would be stay-at-home-dads, working either part-time or full-time homemaker.

Yeah! Women think this a win for them, but men have been trying to get out of work for decades. Our plan is finally forming, they can be the breadwinners and we can watch the 2 PM showing of Sportscenter. It all works out.

Meh, many of the degree's women are getting are typical liberal art/ social science degrees, so it's really not that big a deal. Men still dominate the important fields (engineering, medicine, financial, etc).

Well you also have to look at how more and more men are going into trade work because of how much money it takes to go to school and not too many women do work like plumbing, heating, electrical and things like that and with the way the economy is now it really is the way to go to earn good money with little or no schooling and thats why i think it has decreased over the years.

I will conceed some points to you. Currently, the job market favors people with more technical backgrounds such as math and science. However, there is still good value in a liberal arts education - our societies need it for culture and such. Historians, musicians, artists, philosophers, etc.

Oh I can assure you, there's a great deal in the field of mathematics and economics (both on the "science" side rather than the "arts" side) that is of essentially no practical value but is nonetheless very interesting. Nevertheless, I cannot see why practicality is relevant to how commendable an endeavor is.

In any case, I still can't tell if you're being serious or not. =/

Yes, it does favour those people. That's why some people who study science have flopped into the arms of society and cried out... oh please, please give me a job with lots of money.

I wonder how many of them got those degrees in either women's studies or English.

Off-topic:
I used to find it pretty sexist that colleges offer women's studies by not male studies. Then I realized they do. It's called history.
He got banned a while back. But on topic, even then, men still occupy the most lucrative positions in the majority of fields. So even then, women still got a ways to go before the degrees give them the same opportunities as men.

And there, ladies and gents, is the reason we go out and get jobs: To avoid useless a-holes like you. This increases your desire to stay home and avoid evil b****es like us.

Win/win situation, especially the part where we kick you out ;)

The key is that it reads "more women get advanced degrees than men" NOT "women get more advanced degrees than men". It's quality not quantity. Most arts degrees are not what you would call a quality degree and what a surprise, at my university of 20k students you will find the most females in the arts departments. Also the most Mac users too....
