I currently live in queens Ny, in a good neighborhood and pay a large amount in rent for what I consider a big apartment with parking.i know many parts of queens, brooklyn, and nyc are expensive to live in especially if you want to own or rent a parking spot. basic point is from living on my own and moving 5 times i know living anywhere decent/ nice near new york city is insanely expensive. to the point where you need to make about $100,000 just to save a little money. i do not make anywhere near this amount, yet.

a friend of mine who lives in florida told me renting in florida is cheap and you can get a much nicer quality of a place for the price, i believe this. however he claims going shopping and buying everyday things is ridiculously cheap there. he claims he bought a container of instant dry milk, half gallon of milk, half gallon of tropicana ornage juice/fuit punch flavor, normal sized hersheys dark chocolate bar, and a bottle of suave shampoo for total of $9. that seems ridiculously cheap. has anyone in florida experienced such cheap prices on things like this?

i am asking this because i am thinking of moving to florida to try and save some money. i just need to ask my boss if i can work from home before i do this (i am perfectly capable of doing this with my job as i manage a website all i need is a computer, internet, and telephone to get my job done.)

Is it me or does every person that comes from New York complain about Florida? In any case, rent in Florida will probably be cheaper than New York, but you have to realize that they farther you are away from the city the cheaper rent will be per square foot.

Yeah, Definitely this if it's around Miami or South Florida it can be pretty expensive. Not sure how much in comparison to NY though. Florida isn't that cheap. I have no clue where he's buying his groceries from. Plus the governor is turning Florida even more to s***.

Uhhhh, if you decide to settle down in Miami the cost of living is pretty high, at least to me. Things get cheaper in the more unknown parts of Florida obviously. Obviously living down in South Beach or Miami Beach is going to be expensive.

I don't think it's so much Florida being cheap as it is New York City being really expensive. I live in upstate New York, and the price of all that stuff seems about right.

I live in Brooklyn, NY and plan to move to Orlando in a couple months. Personally the only good thing about NYC are the public services and internet.

Here is the thing with Florida, is it aint South (south east) Florida or Orlando, then it pretty much sucks. The rest of Florida is pretty boring and plain. Up north and West all there is is white people (nothing against white people, but we all know how it is when white separate them selfs from the rest, and set up there own communities). South Florida and Orlando is pretty diverse with all types of cultures and religions, the rest of FL, not so much. There really isnt much to do in the north and there are alot of racist in FL. The rest of the states think FL is for old people and its filled with old people, but I've been living here since May 2000 and its not filled with old people. Also why is it the N.Yorkers are always complaing about FL? Other states dont complain about FL, but N.Yorkers, I get that FL is nothing like NY, but damn! I dont know anything about NY, only what I've seen in the movies and media, cuz I've never been up the and I dont ever plan to. Im stuck in FL for now

the thing is NY is more expensive, but usually people make more $$$ so it evens out. My mom has family over ther so she knows, and thats wat she tells me. And when I worked in construction, some of the guys told me that when they worked in NY they get paid more but everything cost more too so it the same either way

I've gone to FL my entire life (SW FL). I have family there and try to go a couple times a year at least. I will say in recent years the economy has really suffered badly in Florida. I thought it was bad up here (MA) but it truly became evident down there. I have actually contemplated several times moving down to escape but realistically the cost of living can be quite high and if you don't have a solid profession, it can be tough to find a job. If you are young and want to get out of NYC then do it. Just really research and find out where in Fl because like the dude above mentioned, the state is very very different in its different parts.... Plus native floridians dont take too kindly to yankees FYI

I lived in NY for many years and live in FL right now. I ahve spent half my life in both places.

It all depends on the area. I lived on Long Island for a time. The rent prices and everything is else is absurd there. But I also lived Upstate NY, where rent prices were cheap as hell and jobs were plentiful.

Florida has cheap rents for the most parts. Food prices are also pretty low. But one thing I found strange. When I left NY for FL I found that ORANGE JUICE was almost a dollar more per gallon than in NY. WTF?

Overall I say FL is the cheaper place to live. But finding a good well playing job down here is another story.

I live in Brooklyn, been here all my life. Florida would be the LAST place I'd move to if I were leaving BK.

I used to go to Florida for family vacations when I was younger, but that's about all it's good for: vacation. I can't see myself living out there, I love the noise & action in Brooklyn.

Since you're from Queens you might enjoy the quiet, so go for it. But I prefer to have everything within an arms reach, then having to drive to do everything. Like others said, find out what part of Florida first before moving out there.

P.S. - Are groceries really that big of a deal where you'd move that far to save some change?

i might just move to upstate new york (not much further than new paltz though). it is insane that for the same pric or less for the rent i pay in queens for a nice 1 bedroom apartment i can rent an entire house or a multiple bedroom apartment upstate. i would only do this if my boss allowed me to go to work 1 or 2 days a week. i would still work every other from home. where in upstate did you live?

Florida has no state income tax, and there's no sales tax on food items in a supermarket (but tax is applied in a convenience store). If you are still in school, there is a back to school sales tax holiday on some items - unless the governor got rid of it, not sure.

From experience it is. I used to live in New Jersey so that's close enough. I would recommend looking up Seminole County.

As a person who grew right across the river from New Paltz...we aren't upstate. And rent here is normal. There's no place more expensive to live in America than the city, and if you cannot afford it now, may as well move somewhere where you're at least within train distance of it.

I lived in Amsterdam. I loved it there. Albany was only 30 mins away and I worked in Clifton Park, right near Saratoga and Ballston Spa.

Some beautiful places in upstate NY.

I lived in Oneonta for a while too.
