BEIRUT: Two massive explosions in Beirut killed at least 10 people, wounded hundreds and caused extensive damage across the Lebanese capital.

The blasts took place at the city’s port area and were so large the explosions were felt in Cyprus 200 kilometers away.

Buildings across the city were damaged, with windows blown out and ceilings collapsed.

Lebanon’s health minister Hamad Hasan said the explosion caused a “very high number of injuries.”

Lebanese Red Cross official Georges Kettaneh said there had been hundreds of casualties, including dead, wounded. He said many people remained trapped in their homes.

The cause of the blast remains unknown. An Israeli official told Reuters that the country had nothing to do with the blasts.

Lebanon's internal security chief Abbas Ibrahim said the explosions took place in a section of the port housing highly-explosive materials.

He declined to speculate about the cause of the explosion in Lebanon's capital, saying “we cannot preempt investigations.”

Prime Minister Hassan Diab declared a day of mourning for Wednesday.

Here is a link to one video of it. Unsure if it requires a NSFW warning. Looks damn big if you ask me.

This video shows the destruction better. Seems like it created a massive airshock/wave that destroyed lots.

Oh yeah it is a large explosion. You're warned.

The news here are reporting at least 30 dead and 2000 injured.

Edit: It took a minute and now it says 50 dead.

Yup. Chemicals stored in an unsafe way. OSHA should get involved perhaps? :P

Edit: Given the red smoke, that could also narrow it down when it comes chemicals.

This is so sad. I really hope this was an accident and not any sort of malicious attack.

Lebanon (and Beirut) used to be a tourist destination for Pete's sake. It's a beautiful place.

That.....was terrifying.

Looks like a chemical plant or ammo depot explosion. Initial explosion or maybe just a fire, followed by small secondary explosions, finally the whole thing detonates in one large third explosion. That video was terrifying because at the very end you could see all the glass shrapnel flying by.

@mrbojangles25: Found this on 9gag. Destroying windows 15 miles away...

Could be all lies for I know though. Not exactly a news site.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-lebanon-security-blast/massive-blast-rips-through-beirut-killing-50-and-injuring-thousands-idUSKCN25021M

A huge explosion in port warehouses near central Beirut killed more than 50 people, injured over 2,750 and sent shockwaves that shattered windows, smashed masonry and shook the ground across the Lebanese capital.

Beirut explosion generated seismic waves equivalent of a magnitude 3.3 earthquake

From CNN's Paul P. Murphy and Judson Jones

Data collected by the United States Geological Survey shows that the massive explosion in Beirut was so powerful, it created seismic waves equivalent of a magnitude 3.3 earthquake.

However, the magnitude 3.3 equivalent isn't, "directly comparable to an earthquake of similar size."

That's because surface type blasts, like the Beirut explosion, don't produce as large a magnitude as an earthquake of similar energy would according to Don Blakeman, a geophysicist at the National Earthquake Information Center. Blakeman said most of the energy goes into the air and buildings.

"Not enough of the energy is transmitted into the rocks in the ground," he said.

Meaning, if the explosion had occurred below the surface of the earth, the magnitude would have registered even higher.

From what I've read, the warehouse had a large store of ammonium nitrate. Explosions of this nature at factories that house a lot of ammonium nitrate aren't all that rare. It's a long shot to suggest this was an act of terror.

Slightly off topic, but from an analysis I've watched, the explosion could have been equivalent to 1,000 tonnes of TNT, or 1KT. The nuclear bomb dropped of Hiroshima was roughly 20KT. The largest Nuclear bomb ever detonated was 50MT, or 50 million tonnes of TNT. Just gives some context to how powerful this explosion was, and how devastating a nuclear bomb can be.

Not sure if it was a live video, or the guy survived, but judging from the shock wave, that's unlikely.

Which only 6 months ago was inspected and the conclusion was that this could happen due to poor storage conditions.

Here is something more

https://www.france24.com/en/20200804-lebanon-united-nations-peacekeeping-unifil-blasts-beirut

Lebanese rescue workers dug through the rubble looking for survivors of a powerful warehouse explosion that shook the capital Beirut, killing 78 people and injuring nearly 4,000 in a toll that officials expected to rise.

Tuesday's blast at port warehouses storing highly explosive material was the most powerful in years in Beirut, already reeling from an economic crisis and a surge in coronavirus infections.

President Michel Aoun said that 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, used in fertilisers and bombs, had been stored for six years at the port without safety measures, and he said that was "unacceptable".

Later in the same article

Israeli officials said Israel, which has fought several wars with Lebanon, had nothing to do with Tuesday's blast and said their country was ready to give humanitarian and medical assistance. Shi'ite Iran, the main backer of Hezbollah, also offered support, as did Tehran's regional rival Saudi Arabia, a leading Sunni power.

Considering how horrific this explosion looked, it is surprising how low the death count is.

@mrbojangles25: LMAO , that's why Israel tweeted this ?

"Prime Minister Netanyahu:

“We hit a cell and now we hit the dispatchers. We will do what is necessary in order to defend ourselves. I suggest to all of them, including Hezbollah, to consider this.".

2 years ago they announced their plans to hit and attack the Beirut port.

@Tessellation: be that as it may, the Lebanese say it was improperly stored fertilizer.

So stop spreading this toxic fake news and stick to the facts, you're not helping anyone or anything.

For what it is worth I am not a fan of Israel, so it's not like I am trying to defend them or anything. There's just enough bad will in the world as it is, we don't need to stoke the fires.

Yeah. I forgot who said it, but a government official from Lebanon essentially said "I told you so" after this happened (he wasn't smarmy about it, he just sort of said that in so many words).

Oh no not the gay frogs!?!?!?

So now I am reading that the danger about this was first warned about 2014, the chemicals have been stored there since 2013. The warnings were repeated again 2014 and a few times between 2014 and 2017 at least.

Corruption could be a part of the problem here.

Must admit, it's such an easy target for an attack given how impossible it will be to trace a root cause and how easily they would have been able to access it.

Saw this video of a woman posing in her wedding dress in Beirut and then from out of nowhere that explosion occurs, dust and splintered glass propelling through the air. I think I would have fainted if I was there at that point 😨

It reminds me of that scene in Terminator when Sarah Connor dreams of being the victim of a nuclear explosion. Only difference, this sh!t was real 😣
