Donald Sterling, the owner of the L.A. Clippers, was recorded demanding his girlfriend not to openly associate with Black people. His racist command was triggered by an Instagram photo of her's.

EDIT:

Here's a video of the audio.

EDIT:

He's been banned from the NBA.

I will just re-post what I said on the Sports Forum:

Racism will only leave Donald Sterling heart's when he is dead. There is nothing that Adam Silver can do about that.

Plus it would be so funny if the Clippers won the Title.

I bet a $1,000,000 fine or something over $3,600,000. The highest individual fine in NBA history has been $500,000 and for a team $3.6 M. Community outreach/sensitivity training. Barred from attending any playoffs games for the rest of 2014. Then a suspension for the whole 2014-2015 season.

Long term strategy is to get Sterling to relinquish power or, preferably, sell.

Yeah..so I like the Clippers, I think they're an organization that's made great strides in the past half-decade or so, but ****, ****, Donald Sterling. As LeBron said, "There's no place for him."

It can be, but mostly in private. Then you have places like Japan where it's still openly accepted. And yes, I've been there.

You really don't understand why an owner of a basketball team saying "don't be seen with black people" is a bit of a problem?

Avatar image for LittleMac19

Pathetic really, it just goes to show that a person can be one way when they're in your face but behind closed doors is the exact opposite. From what I've heard he had a history of questionable remarks & behavior which makes it even worse. I don't think the NBA can force him to sell the franchise but I believe the backlash from the public will be so great that he will have no choice but to step down. The players, coaches & fans are all disgusted with him so I don't think showing his face in the Staple Center would be in his best interest.

Seems to me that racist comments against black people is not the best idea when sitting courtside at an NBA game...or being the owner of an NBA Franchise...or just being around the NBA in general

sterling really came off as a charmer when he suggested his girlfriend have sex with a black guy with AIDs in private instead of associating with him in public. of course, this doesn't exactly sound like a situation where his girlfriend is with him because of his personality.

it sucks because i still want doc rivers to do well but the clippers' owner makes them so unlikable.

He's the team owner, not a player or employee. The worst the league can do is shake their heads at him. It's his opinion, talking about it just makes it all that more prevalent and takes away from the players who actually play the sport. Who cares what someone says. Last time I checked, someone saying something you disagree with didn't mean that people had to bend over and allow themselves to get butthurt. We live in a world of whiney little babies.

Speak for yourself.

There is always going to be some level of racism, that is different than saying it is "such a racist place". That is complete bullshit.

well he didn't say it was the most racist place, but there are plenty of racist/racial issues going on in the US

Heck not to long ago we had the nation stirred up by a "white" guy shooting a black teen. We've had a number of (semi) recent stories of college fraternities (aka the youth of america) throwing racist parties. We had an entire blow up on twitter about asian stereotypes because oversensitive people can't take satire, which itself stemmed from the ongoing racial issues of the Washington Redskins. You have people who would call anyone who disagreed with Obama a racist. Or people who think that it's not possible to be racist against white people. Heck, there was a big issue after the NFC championship game that resulted in people calling Richard Sherman the N-word.

Nah, that isn't how it works. The NBA is a private business and when an owner/player incurs in conduct detrimental to the league (regardless of whether the recording was legally made) the NBA can punish that such owner/player, it happens all the time. The NBA is a league with a 78% African American work force, these comments certainly hurt the image of the team and the league by extension.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murders_of_Channon_Christian_and_Christopher_Newsom

^Never made national news, as heinous as the crime was and clearly race was a factor

However, the Trayvon Martin case, which was deemed a "self defense case" (regardless of your stance on the matter), had people in an uproar all over the US, bringing in Sharpton, Jackson, Obama and all the usual suspects to fuel the fire of this being a race crime.

My point is, this happens all too often in the US. We all know how the media works, and they love to blow up cases like this, especially when any race other than black commits the crime against black.

Similar not in the severity of the crime, but the fact still remains that white on black cases will always get more media coverage than the reverse. Sad but true.

He's obviously a terrible owner and the Clippers' fans and players have suffered for it the last 30 years. Hopefully the league brings the hammer down and he gets some swift justice. Not just because his racist comments but because he is way over the hill and has been under qualified for that job since day one apart from having money.
