A 9-year-old boy has been disciplined by the school principal and threatened with legal action for writing an “unwanted” love note to a classmate, according to the boy’s mother.

The note in question appears to be innocent, containing words like “I like you” written inside a heart, and “I like your eyes because they sparkle like diamonds.”

The mother, of Tampa, Fla., who has asked not to be identified in an effort to protect her son, told WPTV that a principal in the Hillsborough County Public School District informed her the school would file “sexual harassment charges” against the boy if he writes another note. “What little kid doesn’t write love notes?” his mother asked.

Source.

That's just plain sad. I am guilty of writing one myself. I do remember it made her smile, and we thought nothing of it. I believe somehow my mom got a hold of it, as parents did talk back then. She brought it up and laughed at what i had wrote on it. The parents found it hilarious. I think her name was Delilah, lol .. I must have been in like 2nd or 3rd grade. It was a time and age of innocence. I can't imagine how mad, & confused this parent must be. Times sure have changed. Now i need to go home and tell my 10 year old never to write love letters. Crazy times i tell you.

Kind of sad however I can understand how something like this could be a problem if the recipient of the love letters doesn't feel the same about the sender and perhaps makes them feel uncomfortable.

Right, i think what they are doing is more damaging then what he actually did.

That means this guy was a number 1 sexual predator, lol .. He wouldn't stop, and touched the girl.

Yes. But absent a complaint from the girl nothing need be done. And if she complains....just tell him to stop.

Unfortunately we live in a society of absolutes, especially in our schools; policies of zero-tolerance, not just on bringing a knife or drugs to school, but also behavior, are commonplace.

But then I think about the alternative, and I suppose if we are going to err on the side of caution, this would be the better side to err on.

I recall an article a few years ago about a boy who was snapping a girl's bra; she asked him to stop, he did not. She told the teacher, the teacher did nothing. Finally she punched the guy in the face and of course this escalated the situation to "OMG VIOLENCE IN OUR ScHOOLS! Oh the humanity!!!!". I think in the end the girl was suspended.

Anyway I guess the point I am making is this: it is good to put a stop to any and all "unwanted" attention while kids are still young and impressionable, provided the punishment is not disproportionate; hopefully the kid that wrote the note received a little talk from the school counselor and a warning to not do it again, and that was that.

Obviously the ideal is to let kids be kids, but in a country as litigious as the US, and with schools as poor and underfunded and underperforming as they are, they can't afford to make mistakes.

Wow.

There was a time when that was generally considered "cute".

Now school yard crushes are being criminalised.

Good job PC culture.

Well are "Do you like me check YES or check NO" notes still allowed?

There could be a way around this.

@LJS9502_basic: In the article it says that the notes were "unwanted" which leads me to believe that she did complain. It also said that this wasn't the first note that he gave her. He was told that if he did it again then he would be charged so he hasn't been charged yet.

Poor kid, but one note is enough. If she doesn't "like" him back, then there are plenty of other 9-year-old fish in the sea. Ugh. That just sounds wrong. Wy don't I take a seat right over there?

This reminds me of a thing:

"If he's 4 years old, he should be home studying for his kindergarten entrance exams.

Do you know about that shit? Oh, they have them now. Yeah. Yeah. There are places that have kindergarten entrance exams.

The poor little f**k. The poor little f**k, he can barely locate his d**k, you know, and already he's being pressured to succeed.

Pressured to succeed for the sake of the parents. Isn't this really just a sophisticated form of child abuse?

And speaking of that, speaking of child abuse. Speaking of child abuse, next stop grade school.

Grade school where he won't be allowed to play tag because it encourages victimization.

And he won't be allowed to play dodge ball because it's exclusionary, and it promotes aggression.

Standing around is still OK.

Standing around is still permitted, but it won't be for long because sooner or later some kid is going to be standing around, and his foot will fall asleep, and his parents will sue the school, and it'll be goodbye f**king standing around."

George Carlin, "It's Bad for Ya!"

Our politically-correct society pretty much screws up and over-complicates everything. We start handing out these wildly harsh punishments and warnings for things that aren't even crimes. You have to think at some point, the people making these judgment calls would stop, use their goddamn brains, and say, "Hey, you know, maybe there is absolutely nothing wrong with what's going on here?"

It's too bad we can't let people just live and grow up normal.

What am I going to tell my son when he gets to school? I certainly want him to respect women and treat them as they should be treated, as equals, but there has to be some limit of the PC nonsense. If this had happened each time I wrote a note in school, I would have been expelled. That was the late 80s and 90s though.

But still, this type of embarrassment will ruin the kid's future for growing up and dating. When you're young and hitting puberty, it's really hard for kids to express their feelings to the opposite sex.

@MuD3: Well maybe she did do that. Apparently this wasn't the first letter he had sent her and they did say that the letters were "unwanted" so it sounds like she made her feelings known. Also she is a child so it's not always easy for them to deal with a situation that makes them feel uncomfortable, hell it can even be difficult for adults to deal with uncomfortable situations.
