How about this.. Say you had an important meeting with the boss's boss (like the district manager or whatever), but then suddenly cover your mouth and say "Ooops, he asked me not to mention it to you..." Then walk away. He'll be too concerned about his own job that he'll forget all about you missing a day.
Ah so you don't need to give prior notice because there's a large quantity of workers all doing the same job? My advice would be to come up with ane xcuse in which they won't ask follow up questions, something embarrasing.

unfortunate for little ol' me i do need prior notice but lets say that series of unfortunate events prevented me from doing so ......ummmmmÂ
