I still feel Steven Spielberg is the greatest director but I think James Cameron's films have been prettty revolutionary. The Abyss and T2 were considered revolutionary when it came to special effects and film during its day, and it looks like James Cameron will do it again with Avatar.

What do you guys think? Can he be considered the most revolutionary director ever?

he's good but not the best
if there was no george lucas there would be no james cameron
and in the exact same terms you just said
he basicly came up with a studio out of thin air for a movie and made effects that were not possibleat thattime
and people still use his company to this day (ILM)

plus i have a really bad feeling that avataris be too over hyped for it's own good

Meh I think he is ok, His films are better than most filth that come to mainstream media today. How I wish more directors like Kubrick existed in this industry in this age it would be horrific.

I think it's rightfully hyped because it's been 13 years since Cameron's last film. Can you believe it's been 13 years since Titanic came out?

He's not the best, but he's up there.

Aliens, Terminator 2, and The Abyss speaks for that.

ya i do i can remember seeing it
but so what titanic wasn't over hyped when it came out and he was still a big director then
99% of over hyped movies fail because everyone sees the ads and are like MUST GO SEE IT!!!!
then they come out saying it's bad because expectations are so high
then again this is also the media's fault, but cameron i'm sure paid for the ad space
sorry i will be skipping it, then once the reviews come in and a few friends see it it may be good or it maybe bad
we have to wait and see, but for me i will not spend my hard earn money on something i'm not sure about

I doubt it. Rotten Tomatoes is extremely picky with its ratings. Good CG alone has never been enough to satisfy the critics. Most of their reviews say that the character development is great, and the plot is very well done, etc.

I've seen movies that I thought were great, and they've barely gotten 50% or 40% on Rotten Tomatoes. And yet the average for Avatar is 91% at the moment. No way that's just because the special effects are great.

Can't say I cared much for the movie before, but I'm a bit interested now.

I wasn't ever one to be swayed by eye candy when it came to film, either.

Hm. I decided to finally check out a trailer. I thought "Looks like Halo... I want a Halo movie" (despite hating the games). Avatar looks... cool, but not enough to make me gush over it like everyone else.

Maybe it's just me, but I feel that Avatar looks like it was influenced by some anime or manga. Not saying that's bad, but the whole Nature vs. Technology seems to be the theme from what I saw in trailers. I could be wrong though.

Titanic is a classic no doubt (despite being snoringly sappy at times) and Avatar looks to be amazing but I certainly don't rank him number 1. Certainly in the top 5 or so though.

He's revolutionary only in the technological department. Aliens features some model shots that are still difficult to make today using CGI - like the dropship separating from Sulaco and entering the atmosphere in a single shot.

Not the most revolutionary, but he's still one of the best directors out there.

I don't like RT either because they're usually too tough on movies. I see decent films get butchered by critics, so I usually look to IMDB for my reviews because the films are rated by everday joes who generally have the same sensibilities that I do.

But that's also the reason why I'm bringing up RT right now. They're usually so harsh on films, that when they do review films well it's because it really is a good movie.
