Steven Caple Jr. has been tapped to direct Creed 2, the next installment in the Rocky franchise. Sylvester Stallone at one point looked ready to take the director’s reins on the film which he also wrote, but plans clearly changed. Tessa Thompson will also return for Creed 2 in the role of Bianca.

The Rocky franchise seemed dead until writer-director Ryan Coogler revived it with 2015’s Creed, starring Michael B. Jordan as the son of Apollo Creed. Sylvester Stallone earned a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his Creed performance as an older, cancer stricken Rocky Balboa. Plans for a Creedsequel came together in 2017, with Stallone taking on writing duties. The new film, set to go before cameras in January 2018, has Adonis Creed (Jordan) squaring off against the son of Rocky’s old nemesis Ivan Drago. Dolph Lundgren will return as the Russian behemoth Drago, the man who killed Apollo Creed in the ring.

Stallone at one point confirmed he was directing Creed 2, but now Variety reports that plans have changed and Steven Caple Jr. will take the job. Stallone is still on-board to play Rocky Balboa, marking his eighth onscreen appearance as the character. Stallone wrote the script along with Luke Cage writer Cheo Hodari Coker. Variety also reports that Tessa Thompson will come back as Bianca, Adonis Creed’s love interest from the first film. Ryan Coogler will stay involved as executive producer.

According to Variety, Stallone elected to back off directing Creed 2 after talking things over with Michael B. Jordan and studio execs. Stallone has helmed Rocky pictures in the past, and also directed the first Expendables and 2008’s Rambo. But Stallone’s background mostly as a director of schlock may have alarmed Warner Bros. and MGM execs hoping to repeat the success of Creed. Ryan Coogler brought a style and character sense to Creed that is nothing like Stallone’s ham-fisted directorial touch. Stallone has graciously handed the reins over to Steven Caple Jr., saying in a statement:

“The character of Adonis Creed reflects this generation and its challenges. I believe it’s important for the director to also be a part of this generation like I was in mine, to make the story as relatable as possible. We are extremely lucky to have the talented young filmmaker Steven Caple Jr. step up and accept the role of director. I am confident that he and Michael B. Jordan will hit it out of the park!”

Jordan and Stallone chose new Creed 2 director Steven Caple Jr. together. Studio execs are said to have been impressed by Caple’s feature film debut, the 2016 coming-of-age film The Land, which Caple directed right out of USC. Producers clearly believe Caple has a better chance of creating an awards worthy, character driven drama like Creed. The first Creed was a surprise hit, grossing $109 million in the U.S.

The third major Creed cast member, Tessa Thompson, has also agreed to reprise her role for Creed 2. Thompson has vaulted to a new level of stardom since Creed, starring as Charlotte Hale on Westworld, and playing Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok.

Rocky 5 was originally going to be a parallel of Rocky 1 where Ivan Drago is washed up has been.

Seems like we will actually be getting that movie.

I am praying Brock Lesnar shows up as Ivan Drago Jr.

It would make the movie must see/day one.

Agreed. The ton changes dramatically, but they are entraining in their own right.

Apart from V.

V sucks.

Also he was suppose to be violently murdered on the street in the original ending. :/

Wait, is 5 the one with Kurt Angle and a Bogus Don King?

If so, that movie was ok.

Na, most people hate it, even die hard Rocky fans.

Heck, Stallon himself called it shite.

So Adonis Creed will avenge his father by beating the shit out of Drago's son? Meh, not sure what to think about that.

@uninspiredcup:

That video didn't work but I can guess he saying that because Rocky fans did hate it.

I mean was he saying that before the movie released.

Na, multiple cast members said they just made it for the pay check.

Rocky Balboa was a hard sell and wasn't expected to be successful at all after Rocky V and exists because he wanted a decent ending to the series. There is a specific monologue in the movie alluding to this.

It's been years since I watched it but his sons a terrible actor. The movie tries to go back to being more of a drama but ends with an over the top flashy MTV music video fight and the way it was written was pretty trite, it becomes parody in places. The soundtrack wasn't very good either.

Speaking of which, they won't but it would be awesome they done a redone version of Dragos theme.

The role isn't finalized, but it seems like the frontrunner for the role is MMA fighter Sage Northcutt, who looks almost like a spitting-image of Ivan Drago.

While we don't know what the story is yet, I doubt it's going to be a revenge story.

Sylvester Stallone has revealed the latest bit of casting news for forthcoming boxing sequel Creed 2, with Romanian boxer Florian Munteanu as the son of Ivan Drago.

Stallone made the announcement via Instagram, extending his congratulations to Monteanu, who he calls "6 feet four, 245 pounds of talent". Creed 2 will be the boxer's first acting role.

Ivan Drago, played by Dolph Lundgren, first appeared back in Rocky IV, where he killed Apollo Creed, the father of Michael B. Jordan's character. No plot details have been confirmed, but it seems fairly likely the movie will in some way feature a confrontation between the two younger characters; Lundgren is also set to reprise his role in Creed 2, although in what capacity isn't yet clear.

Also returning is Thor: Ragnarok's Tessa Thompson, who reprises her role as Biance from the first Creed movie.

Directed by Steven Caple Jr. from a screenplay by Stallone and Cheo Hodari Coker (Luke Cage's showrunner), Creed 2 is expected to start filming this spring with a scheduled release date of November 21, 2018.
