In terms of freedom, liberty, and style of government?

Do you think another country is doing it better?

No country is the "perfect modal". All countries do some things well but all have some problems.

No, no and no. There is no ideal nation currently in existence for me (granted, I would not want to live in a "nation" period). Blue states with castle laws, lax drug laws and gold standard are reasonably close. Still have a long way to go, and the federal government doesn't help things.

no absolutely not. a "model society" is always going to be one of those smaller nations, because smaller and more homogeneous society can progress faster and be more "experimental".

A nation that achieve the absolute best in human rights and freedom (personal liberty, democracy/voting rights, freedom of speech), progressive on social issues (LGBT rights, racism, tolerance of other culture, gender equality, prostitution, drug freedom, euthanasia, death penalty) etc etc

Increase access of necessity for all citizen (affordable public education, Universal health care, Unemployment insurance, child tax benefit, low tuition fee, elder benefit, public library/transit)

Sustainable development with (clean air, public green space, water quality, and environmental conservation/sustainability effort)

Social situation (lower gap between rich/poor, lower homicide rate, low crime rate), and a justice system that does not have the highest incarceration rate in whe world and do not operate prisons like private slave camps/ or criminal training schools, that's a very important indicator of a developed society.

Material living (personal/household income, disposable income, space of living, quality of food/cloth/housing/vacations, lower stress from work/healthy living) that sort of stuff.

Political system with parties that are actually different from each other, actually stand with the people, and not in a political deadlock. And the state must be relatively stable, not in danger of collapse.

The consideration of Global Peace Index, Failed State index, gender gap index, corruption/perception index, democracy index, education index, human development index, infant mortality index, life expectancy, quality of life index, freedom of press, statisfaction of life index, economic competitiveness, charitable giving index, environmental sustainability index and distribution of wealth, per capital GDP are just some of the measures that reveal collectively, the more developed societies.

Does US fit the bill as a model for what nations should be like? Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark may have something to say.

State sanction premeditated first degree killing of its citizens against their will is certainly not a part of a model society, you're absolutely right.

the usa will only be the perfect model of a country once every school has a good guy with a gun. Because of course that's the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun

I think the US is a really cool place, even though I've never been there myself.
But it's so silly to think a nation is the best as there are still too many things going wrong to say that any one nation is great. What does it mean to proclaim the best when there is not a single one that does everything well?
Maybe you should look at how much people like to live there, then some scandinavian countries are doing best, despite the heavy US nationalist propaganda.

Nope, its electoral college system leads to a high level of voting power inequality between citizens across different states. The senator by state and legislator by district system also causes massive misrepresentation due to some states and districts having massively more legislative power per capita than others, and you can also see the results of gerrymandering with the fact that the G.O.P can retain a majority in the House despite having less votes for their House Representatives than the Democrats. Its political system is really, really, really crap as far as representing the population's views goes, and no country that wants to be considered "democratic" should try to emulate it.

I can't complain, but I prefer to think of myself as Californian before American :P

I've traveled to much of Europe and Asia, though, and I prefer our "way" of life better. We are still the land of opportunity, still the melting pot; I love the diversity here.

We are far from perfect, but the US is a young country and we can still do a lot of good for ourselves and the world.

If Off-Topic threads are anything to judge it by, certainly not. It seems to have a barely functional government, divided into two stubborn extremes which ensure that nothing ever gets done. I know that isn't specific to the US, but when you throw in the mountain of propaganda that the parties' supporters appear to believe, and the religious aspects that seem to pervade a lot of governmental goings-on...it seems like a total mess. Their legal system also seems to be fairly ridiculous, especially given the difficulties of making new legislation or challenging existing legislation, and don't even get me started on anything relating to the US Constitution - which Americans appear to treat as their secondary Bible. People get sued for utterly inane things, and bizarre judgements get passed all the time. Bleh. Also, crimes. What is up with that, anyway? I've never felt unsafe walking around my own city/suburbs/state at night/early morning, yet all I ever seem to hear about on OT is US citizens feeling the need to arm themselves to protect their own homes from intruders. It's something I'm never going to get my head around, I'm afraid. I could go on, but...I generally don't think that the US is a good model nation at the moment. It's an interesting case study of 'things taken to the extreme', but little more than that.

I dont think it has ever been. the scandinavian countrys have been usually considered the best country to live in, consistently scoring high in all aspects of modern life. (economics, civil liberties and government programs etc) read somewhere that in polls swedes are usually the happiest citizens closely followed by danish etc.

I believe Canada's charter for right have been the base model for many other countries. U.S. Constitution is quite outdated.

whipassmt

some values are universal

longer life expectancy, better health care, better public education for everyone, low crime rate, environmental sustainablibity, ability to speak one's mind without prosecution, higher social mobility, higher relative material wealth, affective justice system that actually works, better public transit etc etc

It's not about mimic other countries and losing uniqueness, it's about being objectively higher on the "development ladder". Unless, of course, you think having ineffetive justice system that lead to higher crime rate is something unique and should be treasured in America.
