A lot my friends drink rather excessively, and as commonly known, excessive drinking can lead to the intoxicated person doing unruly things. I've seen my friends starting fights with each other, breaking things in houses, mostly on accident, and being sick in another friends car. Then when all is over and they're back to being sober, they will say "You can't really blame me, I was drunk!" and a lot of the time my friends will accept that reasoning. To me, it's not acceptable at all. It's there fault they got that drunk and caused all those problems, no one elses. The only reason I would forgive and forget such things is because they're my friends, but I would still hold them responsible for there actions.

Anyway, what's your thoughts on this commonly used excuse?

All the dumb things you can do when you are drunk are like the side effects of a drug that commercials say really fast at the end. People know the risks and if something bad happens they are the ony one to blame.

It's their fault but at the same time if the intention wasn't to hurt or destroy anything , I mean they were drunk can you blame them ?

That's the exact reasoning my friends in question come to. If the person knows there limits with drink, and went above and beyond it, then they're completely responsible for there actions, even if under influence in my opinion.

But to blame and say you broke my 400$ vase PAY FOR IT. I mean , Its douchey. Like what if they tripped over their own shoelaces and knocked that same vase over and broke it. Also , If I know people are coming over , I usually put valuable breakable stuff away.

As far as I'm concerned you are always responsible for your actions. The excuse "I was drunk", or "it was hormones", or "I wasn't awake yet", doesn't matter because somewhere your brain is still working telling you right from wrong (no matter how quiet it might be). If your not sure you can hear the little voice in your head than you should take pause and reflect on what your doing. Anyone that rushes into a situation without concern for the outcome deserves whatever negative outcome they recieve. We are becoming a society of people that believe that a good excuse solves all problems and exonerates us of all responsibilities for our actions. As I tell my kids "Sorry does not make it better, won't bring back the dead, and it can't get you out of jail."

All drinking does is allows you the "freedom" to say what you otherwise wouldn't say. It doesn't make you lie per say. So no, it's no excuse. Saying i was drunk does not excuse, if anything it shows how you really feel about a situation or an individual.

If it was a complete accidental trip that would have occurred sober or not that broke an item, I would say they're still technically to blame but shouldn't really be scolded for it. If it was the fact that they were so drunk that they couldn't even walk properly, thus falling over and breaking something, then they're entirely to blame and should be held responsible for there actions when they come around.

I don't think being drunk is an acceptable excuse at all. It's a mitigating circumstance, but if I were to break something while drunk, I would certainly offer to pay for it afterwards.

According to the majority of European Criminal Codes, being intoxicated actually reinforces the liability of ones conduct.

depends on what they are using it as an excuse for. if i find out my buddy f*cked a fatty, then "i was drunk" is an acceptable excuse. if someone in a committed relationship hooks up with someone that isn't their significant other, then "i was drunk" is not an acceptable excuse.

Barfing in somebody's car or breaking things may be caused by a person being drunk, ie they wouldn't do it sober, but "But I was drunk" is not the acceptable response. "I will clean it/replace it/have it cleaned/have it fixed" is, especially if they are quality friends. If you're willing to get drunk enough to lose control over your ability to hold vomit or other bodily fluids, or flail or fall and break things that don't belong to you, you are fully responsible. You CHOSE to drink the alcohol, you choose to accept the consequences of whatever you do when you were past control.

In my circle of friends, we use "I was drunk" as more of a joke than an excuse. This may sound hard to believe, but my good friends are responsible drinkers.

Alcohol usually mellows us out anyway.

No I can still control myself when I'm drunk. Motor skills are just gone.. Not everybody is chill when drunk though.
