or does anyone else hate the use of aim-speak?

Unless it's done by someone purposely trying to sound like an idiot, I can't stand when people use: u, ur, thx, b4, ppl, sum1, etc, etc, especially if they're already taking the time to type out a lengthy response. Regardless of what they're saying, I can't help feeling like posters who use these terms are morons, even though they might be making a great point.

Also, I hate when people mix up basic homophones such as: to, too, & two, then & than, your & you're, there, their, & they're, etc, because they never fail to sound extremely unintelligent. They put an "edit" option for a reason, but I find that many users will do something like posting an apology for a double-post instead of just deleting the extra copy!

It's impossible to type everything correctly the first time all the time, but there is always the option of editing your post so that it doesn't sound completely devoid of knowledge.

Is anyone with me on this?

Over MSN or gaming I don't mind it, as time is of the essence. However I hate it when people do it in emails and on forums as there's no rush and it just becomes insanely hard to read.

I agree 100%. Time isn't a factor in an online forum like it is in other situations. That being said, I usually take the extra time to use correct grammar, even when texting.

It wouldn't piss me off, that's over-exaggerating it. But it would surely irritate me, especially coming from a native English speaker. If i can write in a decent English as a third language, i would expect a native English speaker to be able to as well.

Wow, +10 respect points Tykain. I "know" 3 languages as well. I was born in Egypt and lived there for 2 years before moving to the US. I can speak it but not read or write it. I'm learning Spanish, but I'm better at writing/reading than holding a conversation. But I wouldn't be able to survive very long in an Arabic or Spanish speaking country on my own, so that's why I put "know" in quotes.

Yeah, but time isn't a big issue on an internet forum, and it sounds extremely stupid to type like that, especially when a few seconds is the difference between sounding intelligent or sounding like an idiot.

Well, even writing "its" for "it's" can cause some confusion with respect to whether you're referring to "of it" or "it is" which can affect the meaning of your post more than you might expect, and I think it's worth that extra small fraction of a second to put in the apostrophe...

Other than that, yeah, kinda agreed, leaving out an apostrophe isn't the same as using things like b4 and sum1...

Actually, just because it's a gaming forum, doesn't necessarily mean we're talking only, or even primarily, about gaming... it just means that those of us with a common interest (and even THAT isn't always the case, I know of a Sonic fan site that some people who weren't Sonic fans joined because they were linked to that site's forum from a religious forum) discuss things including those not related to that common interest.
