Personally, I'd say it's better to be good at being handy with multiple skills as doing so expands your horizons.

OT, your opinions please. What do you think?

Edited a lil bit.

That depends entirely on what the one thing would be. If I was excellent at making money, it might be more important than being good at a bunch of other, smaller things.

I don't think I could just stick to be really good at one thing without getting tired of it sooner or later.

I agree, it's better to be good at a bunch of different things in my opinion.

For the average society, it's better to be a master than a jack-of-all-trades. This is assuming we're talking about career skills.

Having skills in many areas is good, but being great doing at least one thing can be better.

There's a saying, "Jack of all trades, master of none."

Its better to be excellent at one, cause ppl excellent at things get paid massive amounts of money for being excellent at them.
Alot of people who are good at alot of things work at Burger King at 30.

Usually it's better to be excellent at one skill in the job market. Specialists do well.

That depends on what skills we are talking about. In terms of skills applying to jobs, would you rather be the best computer programmer, or be just average along with being an average sound mixer, animator, artist, and game designer? Being average doesn't get you far. Being the best at what you do will take you a lot farther.

If we are talking business, then a combination of key skills which can be combined would be best.

A single skills can easily be mimicked, but having a specific combination of skills to a good level with the ability to combine them provides you with an advantage that would be very hard to copy.

Yeah, but even then they're usually not excellent at one specific think. A skill will often encompass lots of smaller skills.

That depends entirely :| being versatile is a important thing because you may not go into the field you originally thought you would.

You'll find that in the job market it's specialists who are in demand. After all, if you have to hire someone for a specific job do want a guy whose excellent at that job and nothing else or a guy who is merely good at that job as well as a bunch of other things that you'll never have him do during the time you have him hired? That said, to be very skilled at a particular job you usually have to be well versed at a bunch of other related skills as well. For example, as a neuroscientist I have to not only be good at neuroscience but also biology, psychology, chemistry, statistics, writing, and computing (the more skilled the better too; you'd be surprised how in-demand neuroscientists who can program are).

Depends what you want. If you're going to hire someone then you tend to want the specialist as you've got other departments to make up for their weak spots, they just need to be good at the skills required in their department.

I entirely disagree here. From what I see in everyday life, being good at multiple things give you way more opportunities than being excellent at one thing. Basically, if you flopped in one thing, you have others to cover for it.

Well, ideally people that are good at many things would be preferred, but sadly it is the specialists that get paid the most

professionaly, its better to be a specialists. The only dowside to this is that it is difficult to build up a resume and/or experience, but once you do, youre getting paid 400 bucks an hour lol

but as far as every day life, being a jack of all trades is preferred.

Master one skill first then broaden your knowledge to cover the basic of other skills related to yours. That way you can expand your mastery even further.

Im very competitive so I would much rather be the best at one then just good at a couple things.

If you look at all the famous people that accomplished something in history there was one thing that they could do better then everyone else. Just being good at something puts you in mediocrity

Like I'd rather be an awesome/pro volleyball player as opposed to being decent at all sports.

Also, my experience playing RPGs has taught me that if you try to make a character that is good at a lot of things you will end up making a character that falls short when things get tough. Whereas a character with mastery in one area is will be able to rely on his/her strength to overcome difficulties.
