Is going to the movie theaters worth it?

Just curious I haven't been to the the movie theaters since the early 00's I think about going sometimes. Do you find it enjoyable? or do people ruin the experience I know that is always a risk going some loud mouth prick could ruin the whole thing. So do you enjoy going to the movies these days? and do you think it's worth the big screen experience?

From having taken my dad to see Endgame and Far From Home, and my family to Detective Pikachu, I'd say it still is. The only movie left to see in the theaters now is Rise of Skywalker.

Sometimes even bad movies is enjoyable if u watch it at the cinema. live action Resident evil movies epecially the 3D stereotropic (or something) versions is really enjoyable to watch on a big screen.

It's worth it just for that 'day out' experience. I mean, you just don't go see a movie and then go straight home. Hang out, grab a bite to eat somewhere, get to the movie, hang out some more after, etc.

I've been getting a lot of AMC gift cards using Bing for search and seeing some good movies for free. AMC isn't my preferred theater so I go see the stuff I'm super-interested in seeing upon release on my own dime for the comfy reclining seats, but its great to be able to get a ticket and a small popcorn for free once a month.

Sometimes people can annoy, especially groups of teens, but if you go a week or two after release that isn't so much a problem.

I bought the biggest TV I could reasonably afford because I don't want to go the cinema anymore. I barely went as it was and mostly watch older movies anyway. The last time I went, there was a guy breathing heavily beside me through the whole movie, and he wasn't even obese. The volume is usually too high.

Debatable. I think 3D sucks. Promised myself I would never watch another movie in 3D after The Force Awakens. It's blurrier, with chromatic abberation, it's dimmer, and it's conspicuous, with foregrounds/objects often seeming to be in another dimension.

Dunno how star wars 3D tech is applied as I only watch it in 2D but 3D works best when there is a lot of spectacles. Too much of it you will get a bit dizzy afterwards though. I like watching action movies in 3D, I think its the best way to watch this genre.

I live in a small town and unfortunately going to see a movie is one of the few things there is to do.

I enjoy going to the movies if there's a movie showing that I really want to see. I think my only bad experiences at the movie are when you have children watching a movie and they start crying in the theater or people talking during a movie.

I still enjoy it when I do go...which is rare these days. I might go to the cinema once a year if I'm lucky.

I don't think so. In the old days you had a 14 inch brick TV with VHS quality and much less choice of content to consume, at a higher price.

Now you can basically watch anything, at any time on a big ass 40 inch+ TV for really, not that much now.

The only possible reason I can see it for is if you don't have the patience to wait and must absolutely see it, or the social aspect. And most of mine has usually been some jack-ass talking or some kids at the back throwing pop-corn atn peoples heads.

Theaters suck. Everything is overpriced. Stupid people on their phones. Stupid people talking. Stupid people bringing babies.

I only go to Marvel movies these days. It's more for a day out with my son than for the movie on my part.

I totally think it's worth doing for big action spectacle movies, or movies with beautiful cinematography. John Wick, Star Wars, or anything by Benicio Del Torro. But other than that, I just wait to see it at home. Haven't been to a comedy in theaters for a decade now.

Yes, very much so. I generally prefer watching a movie at home. But if it's something you've been looking forward to of some time, then the movie theater will be better than what 95% of people have at home. Please it's nice to be "out."

I personally go to the movie theaters at least once a month...depending on the movies being released. I love it! I always take my 16-year-old daughter with me.

Yes for certain movies it enhances the movie. Not all. Some our fine for home viewing.

The last movie I went to go to see was the 4th Die Hard movie. I think it was the one with all that tech expert b.s.,and still not interested in seeing another movie. I live right beside a Huge Cineplex Movie Theatre with an IMAX or something or other. Not interested in paying nearly half a day's wage to see a movie that I just might not like. Thank you, I'll skip it.

I agree with the babies. I saw Scary Stories To Tell in The Dark and this kid started crying during one of the scary parts, it was annoying.

Wtf? A ticket is like ten dollars. When I go on Tuesdays, they're like five. Are you wasting money on the snacks?

@ezekiel43: To be honest, I think I payed $11 to $12 at the time I saw that movie. Large popcorn, large Coke, and maybe M&M's is quite expensive here in Canada, of course I'm talking about the theatre's. I heard it's freaking expensive nowadays, especially if you have a family with a number of children. I know Tuesdays are half price or close to it, but still out of reach for some. I think if you're the type of person that goes to the movies often, it's an expensive hobby.

Yeah it's totally worth it for me. It gets my wife and I out of the house and it gives an experience that isn't matched on the tv at home despite our surround sound system.

Now I could see if you have a couple of kids or something the cost becomes pretty crazy, especially with snacks and drinks being sky high, but for two people maybe twice a month at most who try to catch the matinee prices it's not breaking the bank.

AMC and Regal both do movie passes where for AMC you can see three movies a week and Regal you can see four a day. They both cost around $20/month, easily worth it if you see at least two movies a month.

Concessions might be the other big drain, if you can go without or be okay sneaking food/drink in, then you can avoid that too.

I like going to one particular cinema in the next town over. It's not as fancy pants as the more expensive Odeon cinemas but having couches instead of cinema seats is so much more comfortable. Still, when it comes to movies I really want to see I still prefer waiting for the blu ray and watching it in the comfort of my own home with a take away or something.

I go sometimes. The one theater here is a few years old and has nice seats, and a bar. They have one cheap day every week, where it's like $5 for a movie. Some of the waitstaff is decent-looking too.

I rarely feel the desire to watch a movie. I have a few DVDs on my backlog, and they have been sitting here in front of me for a few years. I still haven't decided to put them into my computer and watch them again. Usually what gets me is when the one TV channel I get decides to play a random movie, or I'm bored out of my mind and want a drink, someplace to go, and something to get my mind off of life with. In those cases, redbox just wouldn't cut it - and I still rarely take advantage of that even though it's a pretty great deal.

The worst I remember was when someone brought a baby to the Cage/Travolta movie, Face-Off. The movie is 90 minutes of nothing but gun fights. Who the hell thinks bringing a baby with sensitive, still developing ears to any movie, much less friggin Face-Off is a good idea? Only a complete moron.

I just did a major upgrade on my home theater sound though so now I think my living room provides a better experience.

Nope, it´s not worth it especially not today when most have smartphones or think it´s fun to listen to "pretend director commentary" during the movie.

Not to mention the smell and the people who eat their candy/popcorn and other crap they bought.

I still go and see just about any movie I really want to see in the theater. I wait until the last week that the movie is in theaters, then go see it early in the afternoon on a weekday (while kids are in school). Usually makes for a cheap ticket and a near-empty theater.

Watch movies in the theatres is not at every time worthy. But sometimes you enjoy boring movies in 3D transformation with yummy popcorn's and your love one. Now these days you can watch on demand Hollywood and Christian movies at any time at Netflix, Crossflix and Amazon Prime.

Its never worth going to theater. I mean you are not buying a freaking movie. just buying 1 and half hour just a big screen and light turn off. either you can buy movie and watch over and over and over again. thats better option.

Where I live you have to drive halfway across the county just to get to a decent theater, on top of that the ridiculous cost for a ticket. Don't even get me started on buying anything at the concession stand. It's just more of a hassle then I'm willing to put up with.

I haven't been to a theater in a long time. I just decided the "experience" of watching on the big screen isn't worth watching it with a bunch of other loud people, while also being overcharged for concessions and stepping in other people's concessions. I'm perfectly fine waiting for movies to come out on Blu-Ray.

Even without OLED, my TV is brighter than the projection in most of the cinemas I've been to.

Edward Norton Says Spielberg Is Wrong: Netflix Isn’t Destroying Movies, Theaters Are

Edward Norton is calling out movie theater chains ahead of the theatrical release of his upcoming Warner Bros. drama “Motherless Brooklyn.” In a new interview with The Daily Beast, Norton tells reporter Nick Schager that “it’s the theater chains that are destroying the theatrical experience. Period, full-stop. No one else.” Norton calls on moviegoers to be vocal about ensuring movie theaters are running projection and sound at top quality because in most cases around the country they are not.

“A lot of filmmakers and cinematographers that I know that have really started to look into this say that more than 60 percent of American theaters are running their projector at almost half the luminosity that they’re required by contract to run it at,” Norton said. “They are delivering crappy sound and a dim picture, and no one is calling them on it.”

Norton continued, “If [movie theaters] were delivering what they’re supposed to be delivering, people would be going, ‘Wow, this is amazing, I do not get this at home’…Well, I want people to literally walk into their theater and find the manager and say, ‘If this looks dark, you’re giving me my money back. Because I’m paying — and at the ArcLight, I’m paying premium — for a premium experience.'”

Norton said he personally witnessed movie theaters’ bad quality when he went to test screen “Motherless Brooklyn” in a theater that was screening “Captain Marvel.” The filmmaker told The Daily Beast that 14 is the quality control spec the Marvel film should be running at but the theater was running the movie at a 6.2 spec.

“That means it was literally running at less than half the light that was supposed to be on there,” Norton said. “You want to train people. Like, go get your money back. If the movie looks dark — it was — go get your money back! I think we should rally around that. I really do.”

Norton’s criticism of movie theaters came after his defense of Netflix. Norton said he disagreed with Steven Spielberg’s headline-making comments that Netflix poses a danger to the theatrical experience. Spielberg even argued that Netflix movies should qualify for Emmys and not Oscars. Norton said that Netflix is doing more to preserve the theatrical experience than movie theater chains themselves.

“If I disagreed with anybody, with great respect, it was [Steven] Spielberg,” Norton said. “Netflix invested more in ‘Roma’ theatrically than any boutique label at any studio would have by a factor of five. They put a Spanish-language black-and-white film all over the world in theaters. Hundreds of theaters, not just a few; as many as Sony Pictures Classics would have done. They put more money behind it, in a theatrical context, than anybody would have. You can’t tell me there’s a whole lot of people making black-and-white Spanish-language films and putting that investment behind them.”

Nortan added, “There’s a lot going on because of Netflix, and what it was the vanguard of, that represents an unprecedented period of ripe opportunity for many more types of stories and voices to be heard, and told, and celebrated. It’s incredible, what’s going on.”

where have you been all this time? have you watched movies only at home?

For me yes..It's worth. when we watch movies at home, we do not care much about it.. just watch..but at the theater, we really focus on it enjoy it. Most probably not alone, with friends or relations

For me, I think the experience of going to see a movie is a fun treat. I honestly watch less movies and stuff the more available it becomes to me.

I just don't take to streaming and stuff like that like most other people do. Usually like one or two TV shows come along every couple of years and I'll try to watch them as new episodes come along, but beyond that I really don't have the interest for much else. It takes a certain kind of movie to interest me, and I'd rather play video games or Internet it up than watch stuff usually.

There a films you would never bother watching at home but going the cinema with sometimes only a choice of two or three films you can end up selecting a film you wouldn't normally choose and being pleasantly surprised.

Also horror movies in paricular translate much better on the cinema, to the point I don't bother watching them at home

I kinda don't think so, the prices are just too much for what you're getting. You can rent movies on demand for a couple of bucks, a ticket at the theaters is going to be more than five times that. I just don't see the point of seeing something like Green Book for that price, it's pretty much the same experience as if I would see it at home. Something like the Avengers, though, is a different experience on a bigger screen and surround sound. I do wish there were smaller theaters with lower ticket prices, but I'm just not going to pay fifteen bucks on a regular basis to see movies on a bigger screen. Oh, also, I can't stand assigned seating.
