No, I wouldn't say he's underrated. He's a good actor. I agree. He's been nominated for Academy awards and won various other awards. A share of those awards are for the Before trilogy. I would only recommend it if you are looking for light, romantic drama. Another award winning film being First Reformed, which I haven't seen yet. Other films not mentioned yet: Dead Poets Society, The Northman, Waking Life and Tesla.
Not underrated...maybe underutilized? But even that seems inaccurate.
He has been in some good movies, a few incredibly well-received ones (Dead Poet's Society, Training Day), but I don't think he ever really got to the level he could have reached.
And that's fine. I like seeing him star in horror films like Sinister (and I heard Black Phone was great, too!) or maybe under-the-radar titles like Daybreakers.

Yes, one of my favorites. Amazing cast. Such a beautiful movie, a really neat take on the future. Very melancholy, too, because there's triumph but also loss and sacrifice and misfortune and bigotry.
So many films about civil rights are really grounded in reality, often as biopics or documentaries, it was neat seeing a sci-fi presentation on the subject that is likewise grounded in reality but entirely fictional.
I wouldn't call him an A list actor but he has talent above a B list so somewhere in the middle. He's a name you know or if you don't know, there's a good chance you know his face.
