A new study finds higher levels of racism in white Americans is associated with having a gun in the home and greater opposition to gun control policies.

After accounting for numerous other factors such as income, education, and political ideology, the researchers found that for each one point increase (on a scale from one to five) in symbolic racism there was a 50 percent increase in the odds of having a gun in the home and a 28 percent increase in support for policies allowing people to carry concealed guns.

Each one point increase in symbolic racism (a modern measure of anti-black racism) was also associated with a 27 percent increase in the odds of opposing bans on hand guns in the home. After accounting for those who already had a gun in the home, the odds were reduced to a non-significant 17 percent increase. However, the authors note that this reduction is unsurprising as opposition to bans on guns equates to self interest on behalf of those who already own a gun and do not wish to give it up.

And racism was already strongly associated with having a gun in the home.

The research, published in PLoS One, was stimulated by gun control debates in the US after mass shootings such as the Sandy Hook tragedy, and research showing black Americans are more likely to be shot than whites.

The most recent figures show there are approximately 38,000 gun related deaths in the US each year, with other research suggesting having a gun in the home is related to a 2.7 or 4.8 fold increase in the risk of a member of that home dying from homicide or suicide, respectively.

Monash is a fairly well regarded university, so I guess I can consider this study credible. The correlation itself is quite believable. They should probably do more of them though.

They did it within a 95% confidence interval, which means it's a valid study. People who "have a problem with it" can disagree with the science all they want; they should make their own study if they think it's wrong.

So if I understand this correctly...if I were oppose welfare/longer prison sentences that means I would be considered symbolically racist in this study?

Actually, I am aware of that. I again say why refer to the Bill of Rights when natural rights given by our "Creator" a.k.a. God were first mentioned earlier in history. The United States Declaration of Independence, its Constitution, and Bill of Rights are all parts of the same government. Thus, the order in which its central ideas were written should be considered important.

Yup. The article assumes it is in the self-interest of low income whites to support welfare, an assertion that makes little sense. Their sources "predicted Whites' opposition to policies designed to help Blacks". The sources are locked behind pay walls, but I am sure they included affirmative action under "policies designed to help Blacks" which one can easily oppose without racist undertones.

So the fact that I have this is my room makes me a racist? Dang...

This comes down to one of the most basic rules of argument. Correlation does not mean causation. Not all gun owners are racist. Not all racists support gun ownership. This is a relatively pointless study.

Yup. You said what we were all thinking.

Also, the Second Amendment is pretty much a vigilante amendment and historically those groups are racist.

The Green Arrow is a vigilante and he's good friends with a black guy.
