A new study attempts to determine the businesses that American consumers visit most often. Not surprisingly, the list is dominated by places that sell food; and that McDonalds was by far the most-visited business in the U.S.

The study by Placed Insights uses data from more than 70,000 volunteers who have opted-in to sharing their locations with the company. And according to that data, nearly half (49%) of Americans over the age of 14 visited a McDonalds location at some point in March.

In fact, six of the top 10 spots on the study were taken up by food-service chains Subway (#3, with 37.8% of Americans stopping by), Burger King (#4; 24.3%), Starbucks (#5; 23.9%), Wendys (#6, 22.8%), and Taco Bell (#9; 18.2%).

On the retail front, Walmart was far and away the most-visited in the study, with 38.8% of Americans over the age of 14 visiting in March. The nearest non-food company was Walgreens at #7 with 22.7%, while Target barely cracked the top 10 with 14.2%.

Surprisingly, not only did Best Buy get beaten out in visits by both GameStop (#12) and RadioShack (#14), it didnt even make the top 20 list, coming in at #35 of all U.S. businesses, and only the fourteenth most-visited physical retail chain in the country.

Have you been to any of these recently?

One thing I've come to notice about Americans, is that they frequent chain restaurants a lot. This contrasts with many European countries were you barely have chain restaurants outside of big shopping malls.

Last of those I visited was Subway but it wasn't in the past month. Think I only hit one fast food thing in April, a KFC drive through.

Made the mistake of going there last week. Needed a large micro sd card for my phone, they advertised one there for $65--wasn't about to pay $100 at Best Buy. They had none in stock, so they ordered and mailed one to me. Got it Monday...wrong card, wrong size. Went back there to get a refund, and finally got the right card--on sale at Best Buy for only $50.

Shitty service, higher prices and mediocre selection--Radio Shack can suck the high hard one.

Good for you :)

But seriously, on food related topics most Americans I see here mention chain restaurants, even if it's quality places. That's an interesting cultural difference, from what I'm used. On one hand, chain restaurants provide a level of familiarity which is good. If I go to a Starbucks I'll always know what to expect. On the other hand, it takes away the feeling of trying out new places, finding hidden restaurants, etc.

Another interesting thing I noticed is the concept of take-away. I understand this is big in North America, people buy take-away food to eat at home, at work, etc. Over here, this is still very niche, people just don't do it, people mostly go to a restaurant and eat there, or they cook a meal at home. I remember a foreign work colleague that was here once that complained that he couldn't find a single place where you could get a coffee to go, they would always serve it on a glass! I was like "why do you want to take the coffee with you, let's just drink the damn thing here"

Cultural differences are funny

I hate McDonalds. The breakfasts and the milkshakes are nice, but the burgers and fries etc. are just... gross. Too greasy, too overly fried, too much everything. Plus the servers are always rude idiots.

Yeah, that really annoys me. I'm a big fan of trying new things rather than have the same 5 options to choose from, but I guess people in this country like to be certain of what to expect.

But your tastes are wrong. Certain foods are inherently better. How do you describe certain foods being more popular than others? Or how everyone likes pizza (plain cheese)

Everyone like pizza? Everyone? Maybe this guy has a healthy lifestyle, and has developed a taste for more clean foods, and he/she finds all that grease disgusting. Yes, I know one person that does not like pizza. Only one though.

Five Guys has way nicer staff and way better food.  Go there if you are going to get fast food.  Otherwise go to your local pub or something and get a big tasty burger, fries, and some beer.
