Developed regions include the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, northern and western Europe, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, China (Is China really considered a developed country yet though?) and maybe a few others I'm forgetting. If you had to live in a country outside of these regions, where would you live?

I guess I'd live in Mexico given its proximity to the US. Learning Spanish is probably easier than learning some Asian or African language. There are lots of Americans and other expats in Mexico City too, so I guess I'd be fine there. I would guess there would be less culture shock in Mexico compared to Russia or Vietnam or Nigeria.

NOTE: I know some OTers already live in developing countries. This thread is geared toward American and Western European OTers, whom make up the majority of posters. If you live in a developing country, go ahead and say what developed country you'd like to live in.

Ukraine would probably be ideal for me. I identify most with their culture out of those choices and I hear it is beautiful.

Brazil or South Africa are likely contenders.

Also, I'm assume I would have atleast middle class income.

Being poor in any developing nation would a hellish life.

My wife is from there. If things ever go really, really bad here in the US for us, one option for us is to move there where my wife owns a whole mountainside of forests and a lumber business.

I'm not a big fan of tropical climates. But, if I spend the rest of my life at beach resorts, I guess I wouldn't mind.

I think I'd go with an Asian one. South America is just way too dangerous. Maybe eastern Europe...Man, just trying to answer this question really makes you realize how fortunate you are. Yikes!

I live in Costa Rica and I frankly wouldn't change it for another country. Although I wouldn't mind living in another latinamerican country. For developed nations I would like living in Japan but I still like Costa Rica better.

Or much, much less. There's almost no middle ground in China. You're either one of the dirt poor masses or super rich.

I heard it's leaning towards a more comfortable position if you're an expat, especially if you know English and have a university degree. And the language barrier wouldn't be much of an issue if I settle in Guangzhou. Though admittedly, I would have to be extra careful on the people to trust over there.

The Rio Grande is scary; I can't believe people can actually make that across, I totally think auto citizenship should be granted if you can fall into a 30 foot hole swim a mile and run another 1.25miles to climb up 30 feet and do all that without getting caught.

Africa has militia concerns, rampant disease, and slavery is an issue in some areas.

Middle East is a warzone with major religious strife.

Asia has some of the worst dictatorships on the planet when it comes to regard to their own citizens lives, plus I hate the weather.

Central/Latin America has major drug cartels and militia concerns, as well as many political issues.

Eastern Europe is... ok, for a developing part of the world. They are mostly stable politically, income is enough to live comfortably in poverty, no major independent militias, slavers, or drug cartels running large parts of the region, and the area is absolutely beautiful. I think I'd choose somehwere around the Ukraine.

Crimes are just as bad if not worse in the other areas, on top of the other problems I listed.

It all boils down to choosing the shiniest turd. I'd still rather live in the US.

Drugs? You're foolish to think prescription medication are inferior by simply crossing the border, and stem cells can't be done in America. If you live by the border you're just plain stupid if you don't buy your prescription medication in Mexico; it's all manufactured there anyways.

Oh I agree; I wouldn't get a surgery there, but a simple doctors visit for an everyday sickness is of course better in Mexico. Why do I need to spend two-hundred bucks for a doctors visit to simply get a prescription for drug I can get in mexico for probably less than that. I remember in the 90s with 25 bucks I went to the doctor and bought my inhaler prescription.

Actually Japan has a lower Human Development Index than the US. While it has less crime and people do average a longer life those aren't the only factors in standards of living. Social problems is also very much up for debate as Japan has some pretty unique and glaring issues. That long life coupled with a very low birth rate is not a positive.

Yes. It's probably the country I've been on where I've felt the safest. It seems crime is nonexistent. Of course it exists but that's the impression you get.

It is fairly negligible. I feel because of that high life expectancy combined with the pathetic birth rate as well as low immigration caused by xenophobia that Japan will be going down on the HDI in the next few years unless they start popping out kids or they change their stance on immigrants. They've been in a recession going on nearly 20 years now too.
