you don't have to "feel" it.

i'm pretty sure that 33% or so is the actual statistic.

Because the majority of Alaskan Natives still live in Alaska, and rape rates are through the roof there, across the board. I grew up in the dead center of Alaska. It's ridiculous. Pretty sure every girl I know has been raped. Most of them a couple times.

Asking women if they have been molested/rape doesn't really come up in discussion when I meet someone.

if I can be Devil's Advocate for a second, the definition of rape/molest is pretty vague.

Two drunk people hook up, that is rape.
You get slapped on the ass, that is molestation.

Those are two of the mild examples of what rape and molestation count. Obviously there are the more serious violent, forced sex rapes, in addition to childhood molestation and whatnot, but to think that these more severe cases happen to 33% of the population is fear-mongering.

Hell, by the technical definition, I've been raped three times, and molested over 10 times a week. But for all practical reasons, I dont count it as rape.

I think we are simply seeing the knee-jerk counter reaaction to tradtional thinking: 30+ years ago, it was "blame the victim" when someone got raped, "she was asking for it" and stuff like that; now, we are overly sensitive and the definition has been broadened as to not exclude anyone, even if it includes things that shouldnt be there.

That really depends where you are. As I said, Alaska is terrible for that. The place is totally loaded with drunks, drug addicts, and violent criminals (many of whom came to alaska in the first place, running away from charges in other places). I know. I grew up there. I worked right in the heart of downtown Fairbanks for years and years. The rape rate there is more than 33%, i'm pretty sure, and the majority of that is, in fact, real cases of actual, violent, forced sex kind of rape. And that's why the American Indian/Alaskan rate mentioned in that earlier post is so high, compared to the others. Because the majority of the Alaskan Native population is in Alaska. And yeah, they're getting raped by drunks and drug addicts all the time.

regarding some types of molestation such as grabbing or teasing I don't know - they are very common.

HOWEVER:

you will never mistake it when you meet a REAL victim of rape - they are SO devastated that it is unmistakable.

One young Korean girl serving in the cafeteria on the Air Base - when a couple air men started making extremely rude suggestions in Korean she dropped the trays she was carrying and curled up on the floor in a ball.

I helped pick up the things and gave her a hand to sit down and got her some tea but it took a long time for her to come out of it.

she looked to me for help often after that and eventually we were a couple - but only so far because she had been raped by a G.I. and it was several years before she was comforable enough to become 'close' with a man.

eventually she had her confidence back again - after we had been together for about three years she discovered that her father was alive - part of the problem was she had thought all her family was dead - another story - the father had been working for a high official of the government who became targeted as unreliable. he and most of his associates disappeared.

Yeah. Most of the women I have met say that they have been molested or raped. So it is much higher than 1/3 in my experience. It really sucks.

My ex told me once her uncle tried to rape her but she ended up escaping... I wouldnt be surprised if she was lying to me and ended up being really raped though... idk, but she sure was sexually open minded. Thats basically why it didnt work either... she was too much of a free spirit for me likes :)

my most recent ex-girlfriend was molested by her mom's boyfriend when she was really young..i hated when she'd tell me things about it because it made me so mad. also it made her vagina look even uglier than vaginas already do.

Probably so. However, there is very much a sense in which I would argue that the numbers are not easy to determine due to how many people hide such horrible past events in their lives.

Most studies on the prevalance of rape don't count drunk hook-ups as rapes. What matters is whether the victim did or was able to consent.

As for slapping someone on the ass, that's probably a form of sexual harassment. And yes, slapping someone on the ass without their consent is not okay and never will be.

mrbojangles25

Rape is still sexual intercourse without consent - no one is saying otherwise. It may have broadened, but not to any significant degree. And plenty of people are still blamed for being raped.

Rape is inexcusable, but consent can have some grey areas in some cases. For example, I've woken women I've slept with up by performing oral sex on them while they're still asleep, and women have woken me up in that way too. In either case, I didn't have her explicit consent, nor she mine, but it's always been a very pleasurable experience, and a great way to start the day. Is that rape? Is spontaneously performing a sex act on someone without express permission sexual assault?

Do these studies query or find out whether it was actual rape/molestation or just a drunk night out?

Sadly in todays world one has to look out and be aware that the majority of time its simply untrue. I've seen way too many people steam rolled by families and courts in this matter without any proof.

Seen way too many girls lie about being raped, way too many overactive parents that think a hug meant something more...etc..etc
does it happen? yes. Does it happen to the degree your saying? no.
