You see im afraid of planes, I dont like them, hate them actually, I've only taken like 10 during my whole lifetime and I've always hated them.

the last time I was in the air was like 6 months ago, when I went to orlando.

I flew with spirit, really uncomfortable as you might imagine, anyway on the plane back I met this guy who had a transport company for rich and famous (for some reason he was travelling in spirit...) so the guy flies a lot, he told me that one time there was a storm or just heavy rain and the pilot tried to land like 4 times before making it, and that everyone inside got scared sh*tless. I imagined the situation and I kind of panicked :P

then I always read news about planes that fell out of the sky (recently) or hell even some super prestigious airplane that lost a plane with like 150 or 300 passengers while crossing the ocean (got caught up in a storm) which doesnt really helps me feel better about them...

thing is next year I might be going to europe, and I really want to ease up on the feeling...

so how often do these things fail? please dont tell me "its more likely to die in the shower than in a plane", that has already been proven to be utter bs.

even if it were real, you cant compare the situations, you might be easily "rescued" from the shower (not only that but its extremely unlikely to pass out unless you are in some super steamy shower in the gates of hell) while no one will help you if a plan begins falling down.

I don't know where you're hearing these stories. That said, aviation accidents are rare and even rarer if you live in first world countries. Also, if there is a situation it is handled professionally and with haste. For example, when my family were flying from Italy (or was it England?), there was some smoke and while there was some panic. We landed in Ireland and waited a couple of hours until the plane was safe and finally flew back home. No accidents, no falling from the sky, etc, etc.

I understand the fears of flying and I get them too but don't let your fears consume you. Believe me, it can be an enjoyable experience especially if it's your first time.

Well, at least where I'm at, the amount to tedious maintenance that's put into aircraft stops that from happening.

It aint my first time as I said... When my cousins went to canada, the engine of the plane they were just about to board blew up, they took the plane away and changed the engine, then made them fly on that same plane. nothing badhappened, but seriously I wouldnt board the same plane that lost its engine 10 minutes ago...

Well a couple of planes collided above my house in New Mexico, I was just sitting in my chair after my wife Skyler left me and BOOM them just blew up. I have a feeling it was partly my fault, though I don't know why, and I had just gotten half a million dollars too!

I weld airplane parts for a company that mostly works with Boeing, we do Spirit work too.

There are a LOT of idiots at that place haha and it makes me second guess flying. But there is a ton of checking of each part before it ships, and once it ships it gets checked again before being assembled onto the plane.

We could make the best part in the world, but can't change the weather!

You wanna know statistics? There is 1 in 1600000 chance of a plane crash. That is the safest way of transportation, you are more likely to die in a boat ride.

Also, as a sidenote in case you hear it from somebody--planes are designed in a way that makes lightning strikes harmless. Planes get struck my lightning all the time. No big deal.

If a passenger boarded a flight at random, once a day, everyday, it would statistically be over 21,000 years before he or she would be killed.

If you consider there are thousands of flights a day and millions of flights a year the percentage is tiny.

I would suggest you stay in your house and never leave it, except for the fact that you are more likely to be killed in a house fire than an air crash.

with engineering these days, I doubt it, I mean if something goes wrong in the plane thats it for you...the cruiser will actually float and will take a while to sink, not to mention the boats it has and the fact that you'd get rescued by a plane/helicopter if something goes really wrong.

and this is why I hate statistics. Sure it might be the mean of transportations with less accidents...maybe because the amount of airplanes isnt **** compared to the amount of bikes/cars that exist in the world? you can fit 300 people in a plane while you can fit around 70 in a big ass bus. case in point is: if you crash your car, its very likely that you survive. if something goes wrong on the plane, you are f**cked. tell that to your statistics please. and bring me statistics that talk about the survivors of plane crashes vs the survivors of car crashes.

Planes are arguably the safest method of travelling. Accidents that happen during flight (as in, both reactors on the wings blow up or the back of the airplane gets ripped to shreds by pressure) have a survival rate of about 90%. The guys who design airplanes are among the most prepared engineers in the world, they know what to do when sh!t happens.

I have been flying for 46 years including while I was in the military on almost a daily basis. I have probably flown enough to circle the Earth 5 times during those years. You are more likely to get killed in a car accident over an aviation accident and many people survive plane crashes. Look to the crash of US Airways Flight 1549 where everyone walked away (or swam away) from a water landing after hitting a flock of geese in the Hudson River.

As a pilot, I can tell you things go wrong far more often than you imagine. You just don't know about most of it because pilots are trained how to respond to these situations.

Sure, sometimes the worst happens, but the same can be said for any activity.

The only scary thing when flying is the megalomaniacal security guards. Sure, their arrogance and self importance can lead to your death. The flight itself usually won't. Safer than the car, train, bus, taxi and boat.

Basically never? The only thing that can make a plane "fall out of the sky" is significant pilot error. Well, that and fatigue in the structural members in the wings and empennage caused by over-cycling... but that's carefully monitored (and accounted for in the design life of the aircraft), so it's extremely unlikely a wing is just going to fall off mid-flight. Most jetliners are designed to be able to fly on half (or just one) of their engines, as I'm sure plenty of other people mentioned earlier in this thread. But even if all the engines were to fail, run out of fuel (again, pilot error), or experience a huge-ass bird strike, a plane simply does not "fall out of the sky." Check out the glide ratio of the 737-800, the plane you're most likely to be flying on it. It's 18:1. That means for every mile that you drop in altitude, you can fly forward 18 miles. Without thrust. Meaning after every single engine has failed. That means that at a typical cruising altitude of 30,000 feet, you can fly forward more than 100 miles before hitting the ground. Now, you have to factor in wind direction and speed, wind shear, temperature, air density, local elevation (altitude for jetliners its typically measured in MSL (mean sea level), not AGL (above ground level)), and orientation of the nearest usable airstrip. That means you probably don't have 100+ miles to work with... but absolutely more than enough to find SOMETHING to land safely on. The most serious problems occur during approach or departure when your altitude is low and there is very little time to correct for a given issue. As for things "blowing up," that just doesn't happen. Almost every major jetliner (Boeing, Airbus, McDonnell Douglas) model you could fly on has been in operation for decades, and they are given years of stress/fatigue testing before being approved for airlines. Problems occur because operators let them or cause them, and that is exceedingly rare. And, even if something were to explode, airplanes are extremely resilient. The FAA's FAR states that craft intended to carry humans must have a factor of safety of 1.5, and jetliners typically use 2.0, meaning the materials they're built of can take 50-100% more than they needed to be designed for. It's rare to even encounter a situation in which design load will be experienced, let alone 50-100% more than design load. You're safe, so shut up and stop freaking out.

You are more likely to be struck by lighting than being in a plane crash. Relax. I've been on over 30 flights. The worse that has happen was some really bad turbulence but the plane didn't fall out of the sky or anything.
