It doesn't surprise me at all. Some people don't want hugs from strangers. No thanks.

And no, not necessarily. There are a couple points here:

1) While it might not be a big deal to you or me, to some people a hug from a stranger might make them really, really uncomfortable so you're really not under any obligation to have to hug someone just because they want to. Imagine if you're a tiny woman and a large guy who creeps you out wants a hug.

2) He didn't seem to know who she was. Whether or not this matters to him is up to him but he might have thought she was just some random fan who got behind the line, and being "Seinfeld" level famous this is probably something he has dealt with for decade. Even if he knew she was a celeb, still his choice to whether he wants a hug from a stranger (even if the stranger is famous) because of point 1.

Personally, I would never refuse a hug because I just don't want to come off as a rude, but I understand there are people who will refuse them. Also, I don't think anyone should hug Ke$ha; you don't know where she's been.

Ya, I don't really understand why hugging is such a big thing these days in North American culture. There are points where it might be appropriate, but certainly not all day every day every time you meet a new human or to celebrate mundane things. Whatever happened to the handshake? At this rate in 20 to 30 years it will evolve into spontaneous and obligatory oral sex with everyone you meet, and in place of highfives at sporting events, and to celebrate a correct answer while playing along watching family feud.

Me? I love hugs, I don't care from who. Even if you're my enemy, hell that's your problem, I will outsqueeze you buddy. But I don't give hugs specifically for this reason; because it's generally alienating as hell to most people you don't know. "Oh hey stranger let me just wrap my arms around you. It's OK, we are both rich and famous, that's means we share a bond and we can embrace like family!"
