http://variety.com/2013/film/international/miyazaki-to-retire-1200595053/

Studio Ghibli head president Koji Hoshino announced that legendary Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki will be retiring after the release of his latest film, "The Wind Rises." Nothing has been confirmed by Miyazaki himself, but he will be hosting a briefing in Tokyo sometime next week.

This is very sad news. I just recently started to find interest in anime, and it's only because of the works of Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki. The man IS 72 though, so I guess he's had a good run.

I wonder how their animation style will change after he moves on.

pretty disheartening but nothing lasts forever, At least he made his time with Ghibli completely worth while and his legacy definitely would be hard to forget.

Not surprising, but he's leaving a great legacy behind. Unfortunately, the only film of his I didn't like was Princess Mononoke. Then again, it HAS been years since I've seen it.

Wow, that's something I've never heard. Almost everyone I know loves Mononoke. I still haven't seen it, as I want to watch every Ghibli movie in order, back to back.

I know it's silly to expect something as awesome as Spirited Away was. But, I really hope he's been saving something great for the end. Regardless, the man is a God of Animation.

It's sad. I wished he would make something truly great to remedy his missteps with The Wind Rises. Now this irresponsibly offensive movie is left as his swan song.

Hopefully Hiromasa Yonebayashi and Keiko Niwa can pick up the slack.

The last two films by Goro Miyazaki were pretty disappointing. He got the animation down, but can't adopt a book into a proper screenplay. If they pair in him with a good screen writer, I'd say we have nothing to worry about.

Aw man. I guess it was bound to happen sometime. On the other hand, I've yet to see every movie he's worked on. Looks like I have some work to do.

It's been years since I've seen any of his movies or looked up any information about him, which is surprising now that I think of it considering Spirited Away was how I got into movies in the first place, and I thought might have been retired already, but this news surprises me as well. Perhaps I should revisit his films.

I didn't like any of his movies that much except Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. But I have mad respect for him because in addition to all the movies he made, he wrote/drew the enitre Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind manga.

He has pulled this card before, but I think now he means it. Early word suggests that his swan song is top tier stuff.

He's been saying he's retiring since Princess Mononoke. He then said Spirited Away would be his last film, later he said Ponyo was definitely his last.

It wouldn't shock me if he comes out of retirement at age 80 and makes another masterpiece.

Sad to hear, but he is up there in age. I've loved just about all his films.

Wow, that's something I've never heard. Almost everyone I know loves Mononoke. I still haven't seen it, as I want to watch every Ghibli movie in order, back to back.

Yeah I am surprised to hear someone who likes his work didn't like Mononoke. That movie is my personal fav out of what I have seen of Miyazaki's work.

Then again alot of people love Grave of the Fireflies and I personally hated that movie when I saw it in high school....

Will be sad to not be able to look forward to any more Miyazaki movies but the man is old now and this was going to happen at some point. At the very least he will leave behind plenty of incredible movies that we will be able to enjoy still.

I consider Ghibli to be the Pixar of the anime world and I hope Miyazaki's departure doesn't lead to a drop in quality in Ghibli films. It is sad enough seeing Pixar losing some of it's touch, would hate to see Ghibli lose it's touch as well.

A fantastic era in animation comes to an end. Maybe it can be saved if Pixar gets on their feet again.
