The majority of people think that the idea of having a number issued to you is a little weird. (Barcode, etc, If everyone is just a number)

Well, what's the difference between numbers and letters? Everyone is issued letters, and it's their name. It's as if people's names own them. I don't know... do you see my point? / Agree or disagree?

Edit: A name is more than a word. A name is a series of letters that becomes that person's identity. Numbers could do the same.

Letters are more expressive and unique than numbers.

Well unlike the alphabet, in most languages with the exception binary and morse etc. These letters can also have an emotional effect on someone when put together. You'll often find this in books :)

While for their general everyday purpose, numbers are impersonal, logical and well, boring!

I see your point...but names can be similar, thus flawing the concept.

Names hold a person back, without names we would have no memories.  Without a name you have no past, no future, no regret, no loss, no fear but caution, no longing but appetite, no pain but bodily misery.  A powerful thing a name is.  You can become burdened without one.

And if you no what book that is from, you get a cookie.

Well, maybe letters only seem personal because we use them as our names. I think numbers could become very personal too if someone lived the number.

Numbers represent math, letters represent a language.

 That's the difference.

I suppose I can see that point of view. But what if you just looked at math as another language. Because it is one, just a different type of language.

I hate when you have to fill out registration forms and they have the blurred up pics that you have to copy, the 0's always look like the O's.

Just because there are 26 characters in the English language and only 10 in the mathematical language doesn't mean that the mathematical language could be just as expressive, and personal.

Yes in a different world. But there is no potential for this in the world we live in.

Yeah, but a name is more than a word. A name is a series of letters that becomes that person's identity. Numbers could do the same.

I absolutely agree. But maybe that's only because we were both taught to think this way our entire lives.

I think only having names as numbers but keeping the rest of our language as letters would have a seriously adverse effect on our personalities.

I don't really think number can have meaning, and anyway I can't remember numbers so we'd better stick w/ names.

If I'm introducing myself as Bob somebody can go, you don't really look like a Bob (hence Bob has meaning).

If we try this with number like I introduce myself as 655321 nobody's gonna go you don't really seem like a 655321.

Number might have meaning if we were to choose the numbers we were given (for example the number I chose was from A Clockwork Orange), but if then I think that would defeat the purpose of choosing numbers since more people would probably choose the same number over choosing the same name.

Oh, I'm sure it would. I'm more or less just suggesting the idea, that they really aren't that different. ( If it would have always been this way) and I expect people to disagree, I'm only argueing for the sake of argueing.

Numbers are built on words/letters phonetically. (1=one, 2=two) You put numbers together and get bigger numbers, not a meaning.

Exactly... My name in Binary is.....
01010011 01101011 01101111 01110100 01110100...
That might not seem like a language to you, but it is... and it means something. Also in C++ Programming Language... we use numbers quite a bit and that's a language... for example... this makes sense.
i == 0; i != 1;
So numbers are more than you think.

It's not the number, it's the ever-increasing amount of data that seems to become attached to it...

well i sort of see it like this..if someone had a number as a name then they wouldn't be unique as if they where part of some system..when you add a number with another number lets say (2+2) your bound to get 4 because it was already known that 4 would be the out come..letters are unique as in you cant add or subtract them you can do so many random things with them that they can almost take on identies of their own..Â
