Gum disease bacteria may play a role in Alzheimer's disease, researchers say.

They studied dead and living patients with diagnosed and suspected Alzheimer's and found bacteria associated with chronic gum disease in the brains of people with Alzheimer's, BBC News reported.

Tests on mice confirmed the bacteria, Porphyromonas gingivalis could migrate from the mouth to the brain and that a toxic protein they secrete (gingipain) destroyed brain neurons.

The bacteria also boosted production of amyloid beta, a component of brain plaques associated with Alzheimer's, BBC News reported.

Further tests on mice showed that drugs that block the toxic proteins produced by the bacteria stopped brain degeneration.

If you don't take care of the gums, you get the dumbs.

Interesting. They also say gum disease is related to heart disease as well?

I mean it makes sense, I guess; you're constantly bathing that whole area (mouth, teeth, gums) in saliva and swallowing it all day long, it seems like if anything is secreted by bacteria in your mouth it will get into the rest of your body.

Also, iirc, a lot of your teeth are strangely close to your brain. I remember I had an abscess tooth on my top jaw and I let it go a bit longer than I should have; I had this terrible pressure in my sinuses and I got an infection and it felt like this weird pressure on my skull in that part of my head. Turns out, untreated tooth abscesses can cause brain infection.

No gum disease here. I worry about my coworkers man some people force him lose insurance. He have no gum disease either but it important to have insurance. It partially why I tell my coworker to call him instead only talk about him nonstop. She do not understand the risk of gum disease I don’t think.

I just went to the dentist for the first time in 5 years. I have to get cleanings every 4 months to get rid of my gum disease. It's expensive and painful.

I also heard gum disease can lead to heart disease.

Oral care is no joke.

@pyro1245:

It true. I had not gone forever it seem but she say I only need basic cleaning check up which it 6 month I believe. I have good schedule for this because insurance help.

It not relate but people can be mean. If it ever occur to anyone it sad to see when group of people get in the way of people bettering themself. Very strange. It not my direct line of work, I am with elders, but for school we learn about such thing and it quite sad.

That's easy. Just brush your teeth in the morning & afternoon is all it takes. Don't forget to Floss, that's also more important then people think it isn't a big deal.

I think dentists recommend brushing your teeth every 12 hours, and flossing once a day.

I guess mouthwash helps, too, at least in regard to keeping the germs away.
