WASHINGTON -- Indiana GOP U.S. Senate candidate Richard Mourdock declared Tuesday night he opposes aborting pregnancies conceived in rape because "it is something that God intended to happen."

Debating Rep. Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.) in their final Senate race showdown, a questioner asked them and Libertarian candidate Andrew Horning to explain their views on abortion.

All three said they were anti-abortion. But Mourdock went further, putting himself in territory near Missouri GOP Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin, the anti-abortion congressman who infamously asserted that women don't get pregnant from "legitimate rape."

"The only exception I have to have an abortion is in the case of the life of the mother," said Mourdock, the Tea Party-backed state treasurer. "I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize life is that gift from God. I think that even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen."

Mourdock unseated veteran Republican Sen. Richard Lugar in the May primary, and has battled Donnelly for the longtime senator's supporters since. Abortion has been a touchy issue for the candidates, with Mourdock accusing Donnelly of lacking strength on the issue because Donnelly backed the health care reform law. Donnelly has criticized a requirement that ensures women can get birth control, even when their employer objects to contraception.

"I believe in pro-life," Donnelly said, carving out somewhat more moderate anti-abortion stance. "I believe that life begins at conception. The only exceptions I believe in are for rape, incest and the life a mother."

Horning argued that the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision was unconstitutional, and that abortion issues should be state matters.

GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney, who has endorsed Mourdock and cut a campaign ad on his behalf that began running in Indiana on Tuesday, took issue with the abortion commentsTuesday night.

"Gov. Romney disagrees with Richard Mourdock's comments, and they do not reflect his views," said Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul.

Mourdock tried to clarify his comments soon after the debate, saying God does not intend sexual assaults.

"God creates life, and that was my point," Mourdock said in a statement. "God does not want rape, and by no means was I suggesting that He does. Rape is a horrible thing, and for anyone to twist my words otherwise is absurd and sick."

Nevertheless, Democrats jumped on the comments as further proof that Murdock is an extremist.

"I think rape is a heinous and violent crime in every instance," said Donnelly in his own statement. "The God I believe in and the God I know most Hoosiers believe in, does not intend for rape to happen -- ever. What Mr. Mourdock said is shocking, and it is stunning that he would be so disrespectful to survivors of rape."

"Richard Mourdock's disturbing comment about rape is a window into Mourdock's extreme view of the world, " said Shripal Shah, spokesman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. "Indiana can't afford to send a self-proclaimed 'zealot' and Tea Partier like Richard Mourdock to the Senate."

Mourdock has been trying to soften some of his postions for the general election after running on a platform that described"compromise" as when Democrats came to agree with him.

Horning had argued earlier in the debate that Mourdock should stick with the harder line.

"As I was reading about the extreme stands of Richard Mourdock I was thinking, 'Hey, there's hope for this guy.' A lot of the stuff that he said was correct," Horning said, referring to Mourdock's suggestions thatentitlement programs such as Medicare and Social Securitymay not be constitutional.

"He has repudiated a lot of those statements. Some of it was about the unconstitutionality ... right on," Horning said. "We need somebody who is going to stick with principles."

I think what he is saying is pretty obvious and not that crazy...as horrible and disgusting as rape is....something good can come of it in the long run...just as this baby could be hell incarnate....is he saying that children from rape are wanted, desired or great....no...but he is saying that it can lead to something good.....horribly put...but not at all crazy.....I know a woman in my own life that were raped and kept their children..I don;t think I could do that..nor do I think my wife could do that....but she loves her child and thinks the world of her...take it as you will....

What Omni said. Rape isn't a God given ability for man to have, its a crime a man decides to commit. What happens to the child is entirely up to the woman. What God has to do with this is beyond me.

I appreciate that good could potentially come of it, but I feel that it should be up to the woman who got raped to decide if she wants to care for a rapist's child, not the state to decide that for her. Especially if she is not financially able to care for or emotionally ready to care for a child.

Which I disagree with completely nor would I vote for him if he was in my district......but to be fair he is being honest with his beliefs and applying them universally...he thinks it's wrong to kill and "unborn child"....while I disagree with him..it's not a crazy idea to have...at least he's not a hypocrite...

FYI, "pregnancy through rape is what god intended" , not the current topic title. As far as the statement goes, God intends to have certain women be sexually abused so to get pregnant? Guess God in his eyes is a large douche.

What about the rape babies that are alive and enjoy life?

What about the mother's who have to deal with a living reminder of the pain and suffering they went through? You can argue it both ways here. There are some women who will see it from the way the GOP usually does, which is every life is sacred and special, despite the circumstances of the conception.

Other women will be constantly reminded of being forcibly hurt and violated, and react negatively.

You may come back at me and say, "Well, the mother can just give the baby up for adoption when he/she is born." A valid point, but it's different when you see how much a toll a pregancy can take on a woman, even when the conception was desired.

I say these things without judgement, I respect both sides, as long as they are politely discussed, not the crap that happens in OT.

For the record, I'm pro-choice.

It's quite simple to me. 1. You support abortion or 2. You do not support abortion If I'm being completely honest, I think being abortion EXCEPT in cases of rape etc is fairly hypocritical. Especially considering the arguments against abortion usually consist of buzz words like murder and life. How is anything different in the rape case?

Pro-life here so you can probably guess my response... This situation sucks deeply regardless but allowing women to abort(I'll skip the tastelessness inferred from the word murder) is no different than letting the victim of a crime seek the death penalty... Higher emphasis should be applied on preserving life...

Stupid comment, but the title is really misleading. He never said that rape was "a gift from God", rather that no matter how life begins, it's a gift from God.cslayer211
I'm so glad that God includes rape in his grand scheme of things. Such a benevolent being.

I'm a Christian, but if God condones rape then I may start to question my leadership.

[QUOTE="Omni-Slash"][QUOTE="l4dak47"] Anything can lead to good going by that logic.

No.....

Sure, you say that this guy is right in that something good can come out of something bad. Why not also apply that logic to all bad things such as child molestation, genocide, murder, slavery, etc. The answer is because it's fvcking stupid and anyone who believes in that should be mocked and ridiculed.

Conservatives have a major problem when it comes to abortion in the cases of rape. A lot of them don't see how that makes it any different.
