Don't get a gaming laptop. Given your age, I'm 99.9% sure that you don't really need one.
Let me tell you- I have a pretty decent gaming laptop (Dell Inspiron 1705- 1.83ghz Core Duo, 1gb Ram, 7800 Go). The only reason I have one is because I moved to China and wasn't able at the time to take a desktop, so it was my only way of playing games.
This thing gets hot as hell and scorches the inside of my legs. Given the fact that you're not a businessman frequently travelling, it sounds like to me that you're going to be staying in one place most of the time. That means you can use a desktop. Given how hot this thing is (and its size), it's not the type of thing you carry to a coffee shop.
If you want to have your own laptop to take with you to places, just get a regular one. If you want to play games, do it at home on your desktop. You really should only combine the two unless you're absolutely desperate...and you're not. Going to grandma's for two weeks? Take a book- you'll be fine.

what does drivers ed have anything to do with this?

what did this post have to do with anything? and seriously, if she's offering you a $600 laptop, its bratty for you to want more, if my parents spent $600 on anything for me I would be stoked

that's like 5 years old in internet years.
anyway
1st you shouldn't get a gaming laptop their a waste of money. Get a gaming desktop which you might be able to hammer out for 600 assuming you know what you're doing (probably not since you think gaming laptops cost 2k)
2nd why can't you just chip in the rest, it seems stupid that your parents are expected to pay for something involving your entertainment.
3rd you really seem to be whining alot about this, grow up.
