President Hollande told the Algerian Parliament France's behaviour in France was "brutal and unfair"

He also said"

"For 132 years, Algeria was subjected to a brutal and unfairsystem: colonisation. I acknowledge the suffering it caused"

"We respect the act of memory, of all the memories. There is a duty of truth on the violence, the injustices, the massacres and the torture,"

"On May 8, 1945, when the world triumphed over brutality, France forgot its universal values,"

http://www.aljazeera.com/news/africa/2012/12/201212209928683335.html

What do you think? Is it a waste of time for people to ackloweldge their colonial past? Did he go to far? Not far enough?

I still want reparations from England.

Also, it seems kinda pointless to say "We did this exty years ago, we're sorry!"

I sort of agree. There's nothing that can be done about it now.

Tell that that to the families that have suffered. 9/11 is also in the past. Let it go...

Good. Bit surprising I would write 'good" in response to something Hollande did, but um, end times and all I guess. It's all in the past, of course, but adamantly refusing to admit your country's past atrocities is really silly (looking at you, Turkey).

It's a nice gesture, but you really cant apologize for the actions of your forefathers.

Sure you can. It's a very important symbolic gesture, as it can be the start of new relationships between countries.

It's not really about the apology (nobody cares so much what one person thinks 50 years later). It's simply about getting the french government to recognize the terrible things that their precedents did. It's more about politics than anything else.

Hmm, let's see if Hollande can correct the problems that North Africans face in France itself.

An apology's not really worth much if it's not supported by action...
