Which major are you interested in? And why?

Even if you aren't dead-set on a certain major, let's see what you're interested in.

Right now, I'm in college for Game Art & Design but I'm transferring and switching my major to Psychology after this quarter.

What about you?

Didn't we have an identical thread just a couple hours ago? Oh well, weird coincidence. Anyways, I finished my first year of general engineering at the UofCalgary, and I'm planning on entering the Geomatics engineering department next year.

No idea, for my undergraduate it's all up in the air but I want to get into an Arts and Science program at University of Toronto or McGill. USC is also on my list.

My major is Sociology because the classes are interesting. I'm not planning on doing anything with the major though lol. I just need a degree so I can teach English in China eventually! I also have a minor in Portuguese for some easy classes/credits (I'm Brazilian).

Why did you switch your major? I originally was Computer Science, but quickly realized that programming is "da devil" and I also hate math haha

I did 2 undergraduate degrees, one in Arts and one in Science. I am not working in either field now, as I changed to another major for graduate school.

My major is MCB: Cell Developmental Biology: Physiology. I'm in this since there isn't an official "pre-med" major.

Currently at Uni. I enjoy my Economics and philosophy double major in arts more than my acctg and finance majors in commerce. The latter will be more helpful for a career, the former just so I don't go insane.

I just finished my first year of law school. :) It's incredibly boring at time but pretty straightforward, and the hours are very very lenient. I'm in for two hours a day whereas other people i know doing other degrees are in 9-6.

I was going to this art school and I saw other people's passion for it and compared it to my disinterest and realized that art isn't for me. I didn't enjoy what I was doing and I'm less creative than I used to be, I've become very practical and scientific over the past couple years. I'm really interested in Psychology because I've always had an interest in human behavior and I could see myself counseling or something of that nature.

I'm currently majoring in neuroscience. I'm hoping to go to a good grad school, get my PhD, and then land a tenure track job at a university. All of which is much easier said than done. Especially that last one.

This may sound stupid (and probably is), but what is a tenure track job? Are you referring to you working as PhD at university, and "rising through ranks" at a faculty? :P

I think tenure is when you're basically locked into your position (barring some huge misconduct).

I think tenure is when you're basically locked into your position (barring some huge misconduct).

Yeah, tenure is the holy grail of academic life. Once you get it you get big benefits, a paycheck that's actually decent, and the best job security ever (the only way you could get fired is if you do something like get caught on tape having sex with an underage student).

Tenure track basically means that the position you get hired for could eventually lead to tenure if you're able to meet the demands of the job (and if you don't then you get fired, so there's really no choice in the matter. That said 20% of people on TT positions do manage to stay hired without tenure). Faculty who are tenure track are usually the professors who do research. They're the people with titles like "assistant professor", "associate professor", and "professor" at your university. The people who have titles like "lecturer" or "visiting" are non-tenure track, generally don't do research and their benefits and pay aren't nearly as nice.

So yeah, when I say I want a TT job that means that I want to become a university professor/researcher one day. The reason I didn't just say "become a professor" is because landing yourself a tenure track position is a massive feat of accomplishment in and of itself (it's common for universities to get 200+ applications for one job opening. A disturbingly high number of Ph.D.'s get stuck in post-doc purgatory for 5-10 years or more because of this).

In the other thread I said possibly community college, and that would be for cake decorating, baking, etc. So culinary courses.
