Hmm... *lets march off to Wikipedia!*. I'm more of a rock fan, with the taste of some heavy metal sometimes to mix it up. So, I have no idea. *runs off to Wikipedia to cheat*

Deep Purple, Led Zepplin and Black Sabbath all come out around the same time.

Black Sabbath. Anyone who doesn't know this cannot call themselves a fan of metal.

Black Sabbath along with Led Zeppelin made the way for heavy metal, then you had NWOBHM bands like Iron Maiden and Saxon that came around in the 80s along with others.

It's highly debated, but I'm gonna go with the most logical, Sabbath.

Sabbath started metal on their first album with their self titled song "Black Sabbath." Zepplin is great, but actually had little influence on most metal musicians.

Maiden FTW, no other band had as much metal fans than them, Steve Harris started the band in 1974 and bore the first "Metal"brand

Iron Butterfly or Black Sabbath. Irony Butterfly had "Ina-Gadda-Da-Vida" or whatever, which was technically the first metal song, but it was Black Sabbath overall.
