I've never heard of it either. Perhaps they consider the caffeine in it to be an off-limits drug similar to how some sects view alcohol as an off-limits drug?

Tea has caffeine in it, although it's a relatively small amount compared to coffee, Red Bull, and Mountain Dew.

Unless you are drinking jugs of tea, there is no way the caffeine is going to effect you. The health benefits of tea FAR outweigh any religious objection to it.

She must be Mormon. My wife's family is Mormon (although my wife herself has never really practiced it apart from attending church a few times as a kid), and some of them don't drink tea (or anything with caffine).

Some denominations and religions have a no-holds-barred condemnation of drugs, including caffeine, which is present in tea.

Yea, it's probably the caffeine. My church used to be against caffeine however that wasn't a religious requirement, just a suggestion for healthier living. Most people just ignore it nowadays though.

Really? I have run into a few Mormons who have been against the drinking of caffeine. The particular Mormon I am thinking of was upset that the coffee shop where I work did not cater to Mormons more than we do . . . which was something that really confused me at the time. Would that not be like me going to a strip club and being upset they did not cater to me better by making the strippers wear clothing?

Does anyone know the reasoning behind that? Obviously a ton of caffeine is bad for you, but it really doesn't hurt anything to have a little bit here and there...

are you asking for reasoning behind a religious belief?

I know a while back continuing revelation said that caffeine was now ok. Some still don't do it but others now can drink caffeine.

It is a mind-altering drug. Though, I do know that some monastic Christian denominations actually used coffee when it was first introduced into Europe as a means of coming closer to God. I'm not too well-versed on the Mormon tradition, but personally, I find it quite odd, as it only increases alertness and wakefulness... and can only improve one's ability to pray and concentrate on God.

...and improve one's ability to stay up late to study for a theology exam. "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31). :P

Yeah, she's probably Mormon. I knew a girl who said that she could drink sodas with caffeine, but no hot caffeine like in Coffee or Tea. Seems pretty ridiculous to me, but so do most of the other Mormon ideas.
