Amazon, itunes, Jamedo, freemetalalbums.wordpress...

I mostly buy CDs, though, much prefer that to downloading.

Amazon, Zune Marketplace and Napster. I like the subscription service, very easy to access music anywhere and download them to my player.

It was a generic reference so it's a freebie, if you had named sources, not so generous.

i mostly buy CDs. I dont think i've ever purchased a song of itunes. I like the free tv shows off there and podcasts. I am a cheapskate i guess. I mostly listen to CDs in my car (doesnt read MP3s and no input jack for an ipod) and FM radio. A few times i did buy some MP3s from this russian website. they were like 1/2 the price of itunes or less. worked just fine too.

Im suprised so many people use itunes, you have to pay extra even to download 256kbps which is the minimum you should be using imo. I have bought from amazon, hmv, tesco and we7.

If I'm ripping CDs I rip in FLAC (like 1400k) then convert to Apple Lossless for iTunes. I don't have a problem with 50mb/song. Worth the sound quality.

Yep, FLAC is the absolute best but it takes up a ton of space so I don't have that many albums ripped in that format. Usually just 320kbps or 192kbps for long albums for me.

MP3 VBR with a min bit rate of 256 for me. Really can't tell any difference whatsoever between anything @ 256+ bit rate.

Pretty much this. I will listen to the CD/LP if I want the purest quality. If I want to copy it to my PC, and if the album is an hour or more long, the space it takes up for that quality gain isn't enough to justify it except in extremely rare instances where nuances in sound are 1) audible in the mix/production, and 2) can completely change my outlook on the album. Plus when you have 5,000-6,000+ songs, the average length of which being above 6-7 minutes, the amount of space FLAC would take up is obviously not worth it.

Yeah, I've started buying digital a bit more. I use Digital-Tunes.net ..really nice electronic music site. They offer WAV/FLAC/MP3, and you get all 3 formats with every purchase, and the ability to download your purchase as many times as you care to. High quality front-cover album art is usually included. Very nice prices, too.

Yep, FLAC is the absolute best but it takes up a ton of space so I don't have that many albums ripped in that format. Usually just 320kbps or 192kbps for long albums for me.ex-mortis

It doesn't take *that* much space. Relative to MP3 tracks, sure..but not relative to today's massive HDD capacities. For PMPs (flash-based especially), yeah, FLAC tracks are going to be a bit much. Utilizing lossless formats probably reduces battery life anyway (more storage activity due to the larger filesize, intenser decoding process as well.)

But it's perfectly fine for a home machine. I'm averaging something like ~40GB per 1,000 songs (I only use FLAC Level 5. Multi-track+cue.) Really not a lot with 3TB of storage..and you can get 1TB+ HDDs for well under $100 these days.

Also, audio quality isn't really the reason to use FLAC (properly-encoded lossy will sound the same on all but the most high-end hardware), I use it simply because it makes transcoding for my various media devices less problematic. Lossy->lossy is a no-no. For my PMP, I roll with Vorbis.

A 2tb HDD is like 130 bucks I think. More than enough room for 7000 songs in FLAC.

I use to go around record label websites and band websites to get my songs. I had quite a few like that. A good 100-190.
