I want to buy a zune hd. I just don't want a new one to be announced two weeks after I buy one or something...

Microsoft discontinued the zune. So you might want to steer clear.

Why get a media player? Get a Windows phone. I've got an HD7 and I likeWP7 better than anything else.

I still may get one. I want the zune pass. Just cause its discontinued doesn't mean you can't buy one now. (while reading over this I realized it had a smart sarcastic tone haha. I didn't intend that btw)

Just get a smart phone and use that. MP3 players are a think of the past.

ive got a zune. and its beast. love it. too bad its discontinued.

i hate the ipod and itunes (always found the layout to be horrible and dont much care for the ipod interfaces).

i understand the majority of people wanting to hold all media in 1 place(i.e you phone). but for heavier music listeners phones just dont cut it. especially when i hook my zune into a proper sound system. doing this with a phone is just inconvenient.

Microsoft will continue to support the Zune software, but the hardware's done. Best Buy still might have some on the cheap; the local one where I live had a deal on some of the units they had left in stock.

What sucks is my zune died a couple days after they made the announcement, so I've been mp3 -less for a while.

They still sell them, don't know why they'd not work even when they stop selling/making them. :?

Zune HD was actually a really great device. It was just too late to the party to garner a real success.

But now and days, smart phones are your one stop solution to portable devices. Other than the nanos, Apple hardly supports ipods anymore.

What can a random MP3 player do that an iPhone or android can't?

Heck, even Blackberrys are compatible with iTunes.

The only thing I can think of is possibly storage space. Other than that, there is absolutely no difference.

If I were to ever purchase an mp3 player again it would be one from creative. I made a permanent install of the zen into my car. Otherwise I just use my android.

If I used my Nexus S for music like I used my Zune, the battery wouldn't even come close to making it through the day. :x

IDK about the Nexus, but most phones can conserve power if you just have to turn off certain features, like WiFi and 3G band. Plus there's the convenience of only carrying one device vice 2.

It's not obsolete. I still use my iPod at the gym as I don't mind if that gets banged up.

The Zune is dead, which is a shame because I really like zune. I like the look and feel of a zune HD above an ipod touch anyday. The interface is better imo as well.

I don't understand why people think smart phones are the way to go for music. I'd like to listen to music uninterrupted. No phone calls or texts cutting in unexpectedly. Besides, when I hook my zune up to a car outlet or stereo I can still USE MY PHONE for texting or Facebook. Ya know...

EDIT: That made it sound like I text when I drive, which I don't. But if I'm outside doing something and wanna listen to music I'll hook my Zune up to my car (sound system baby).

1. You can't easily hook your phone up to a stereo 2. MP3 players can hold higher quality music, such as FLAC and such. Infact, for my next one I think I'll get one that is FLAC compatible.

According to this article, Zune is not dead. Bloomberg jumped the gun with their article. As of right now, Microsoft plans to use the Windows Phone 7 for the Zune hardware and they aren't ruling out new stand-alone versions of it in the future.

Granted, the Zune is nowhere near as popular as the iPod, but in my opinion it's a better device for a lower cost. But since majority rules you'll get much wider support with an iPod. If you only want a device for music on the go (or you drive a Ford model since they're one of maybe two or three car makers who support it) get a Zune. If you want to connect to various devices that aren't supported by Zune get an iPod or use your phone. Also, you may want to look into Amazon's Cloud Player if you have a 4G Android or live in a good area for signal strength. You can load your collection on the Cloud drive and stream your music from your phone without using the actual memory of the phone.

What can a random MP3 player do that an iPhone or android can't?

Heck, even Blackberrys are compatible with iTunes.

The only thing I can think of is possibly storage space. Other than that, there is absolutely no difference.

You say this like it's not a big deal. "O, the only difference is you can't carry all your music with you". That is a major draw back. Also, a smart phone costs a hell of a lot more. I have no need to be paying the monthly bill for internet connection and all that rest of the fees associated with those phones. I use a "dumb" phone and it makes calls. That's all I need. Even if I didn't buy a good plan to cut back on the monthly bill, a smartphone like the Droid Charge is going to cost me $300 with a 2 year contract with Verizon, $570 without a contract. The Zune HD 64GB cost $250.

So an MP3 player can hold more music, costs less in the long and short run, and plays more music files (as another user already stated). That's three legitimate reasons to use an MP3 player. It's really not a big deal having to carry around the Zune HD in my pocket, the thing weighs less than 3oz.

Reason I first switched to the Zune is because I purchased a iPod Classic broken out of the box. Now I know that such cases are an anomaly, but I couldn't buy from Apple again after that. I was all happy to have my new iPod and I open the box only to receive Steve Job's middle finger :P

If you really like the Zune interface, any WP7 phone pretty much has a built-in Zune.
