Seems to me like the only music around anymore's Metal, Pop, Hip Hop, Electronic and ALT ROCK!

Is there anyone who listens to rock without it needing to be labled as Alternative?

Robert Plant, a prime example. Real rock music with this "Alternative" bullcrap. Infact, I wonder if there are actually any Rock musicians around today that are rock with being labled Alternative.

Yeah, there isn't a whole lot of plain "Rock" nowadays, its always some sort of fusion or alternative sounding thing. I still listen to Led Zep, Van Halen and some others.

There's no such thing as "false rock". Whoever listens to any kind of rock listens to "real rock". Whether or not YOU like it is a different matter and not important to fans of alternative rock.

As someone who listens to so many forms of music... I really don't like rock music... its wierd... I mean, some groups I love(Coheed and Cambria, for example)... but for the most part, rock music is... boring...

It's rock music with rejection to the mainstream or something like that. I don't dislike the music, just the lable "Alternative Rock". Some of the music's really good, but it should just be labled as rock.

I listen to old real rock, but there isn't a lot of modern real rock. I only use real rock in relation to how OP describes it btw. http://www.last.fm/user/johngebreadman/charts?rangetype=overall&subtype=artists

I personally think "Rock" is way to general a term to base the argument one. Particularly when the OP didn't bother naming off any bands as a basis to compare to. What exactly is Rock to you?

Iron Maiden? Black Sabbath? I personally consider them Metal. Some may consider them Hard Rock. Journey, Boston, and Foreigner? I would call them rock I guess. Where others may consider Bob Dylan, Bob Seger, and maybe to a lesser extent Johnny Cash to be Rock. All sort of a moot point for me though as I like every one of these artists to some extent.

I'm guessing anything new just gets labeled "alternative", only Boston, The Eagles, The Who and old stuff would fall under "rock"

My idea of rock would be Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Cream, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai. Those kinds of guys. I'm also classifying Hard Rock as Rock. It's just the label "Alternative" I hate. If Radiohead, Muse, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters. etc were just labeled "rock" like they should be then things would be so much simpler. Really there's no difference between Rock and Alternative Rock in terms of Characteristics. It's almost like "The age of the music is it's label"

There are at least a couple bands around that are keeping rock alive:

Muse

Cage the Elephant (Their new album is the best album to come out in YEARS)

Them Crooked Vultures (Considering two of the three band members are from two bands that changed rock music forever, this band had no choice but to be awesome)

You just listed bands from about 5 different genres as "rock," and yet you bicker about insignificant and arbitrary differences in classification by other people in the thread? This thread is pointless.

Excellent post! They are by far the most recent band I was catalogue in my mind as 'Straight-up Rock'. And they're awesome. I love good ol' Rock, especially 70's Rock. But I get all confused with music genres, especially when it comes to what is Rock and what is Heavy Metal, Alt. Rock etc. etc.

Not true at all. I call AC/DC pretend rock 'cause it's the same old formula over and over. And the formula isn't even that good. And not to mention their commercial sellouts.

Being formulaic doesn't define a genre. In fact, it makes it easier to distinguish a genre as most people that branch out of a singular genre tend to experiment more with their sound

That's brilliant music that experimental stuff. Progressive Rock.
