I thought the first one was a good satire of the horror genre, while also being a pretty good horror movie. It's one of the earlier self-aware "this is a horror movie that knows it is a horror movie" films, and I sort of enjoy that very mild breaking of the fourth wall.
Not really a fan of slasher films, I like supernatural elements to my horror films. Aliens or monsters or devils. But I like the few Scream movies I've seen.
I appreciate the first Scream movie for the reasons @mrbojangles25 mentioned. Other than that, I'm quite indifferent towards the franchise. Haven't even seen the sequels.
When I was a kid they were more entertaining. They became more goofier to me as I got older. Halloween was my favorite but even that got cartoony to me.
