From what the NSA is doing to the Patriot Act to our 2nd amendment rights being restricted because of psychotic mad man....do you fear the U.S government? Link

According to the link, the NSA has over stepped it's boundaries and abused it's authority over 1000 times since 2008. This includes listening in on phone conversations, reading emails/letters, monitoring google searches, etc. all on law abiding U.S citizens. Obama has had nothing to say about this and he doesn't care that the NSA is doing this. Do you feel that the U.S is becoming more and more like a police state and is only getting worse?

Not really. It's not really efficient at what it does so I don't see the big concern here.

Too grossly incompetent to do anything. A small part of me fears that as technology advances, it'll marginalize their problems and all the power-mongering they've been doing will eventually be seen in action to the detriment of society. A larger part of me knows that they'd still manage to screw it up somehow.

There will always be concern for entities that are more powerful than you, whether it is fear that the government will want to be corrupt or fear that criminals may cause problems. I don't fear the government itself but I have issues with people inside the government who aren't doing the right thing.

No, I think they make stupid decisions and do stupid things sometimes but as long as I'm not breaking any laws I see no reason to be afraid.

Not really. At least, no more so than other powerful entities.

It's one more mechanism in society that's used to counterbalance power, just like individual actions/votes, companies, activist organizations, etc provide a counterbalance to the government (and the other entities in the social ecosystem).

No, I fear people more. My friends mother was getting treats and hostile confrontations from co-workers after 9/11 because she's Filipina, people of color were getting attacked at random in the city afterwards, provoked by fear that foreigners/POC were terrorists. My friend's father went and bought a shotgun and took his family out to the woods and taught them how to use it. I started carrying a knife and pepper spray with me when I took the bus since a couple of those assaults happened while people waited for the bus late at night. Also at the time people were pretty reactionary to photographers, and I was doing a lot of photography at the time. I remember reading stories of tourists taking photos and security guards or police coming and arresting them because they thought they were taking photos to plot some sort of terrorist attack. In our post-9/11 world I guess what I fear most regarding the government is the lackeys, morons with authority that treat every small thing as a terror threat. The TSA worker who takes away your toothbrush in fear it can be used as a shank. The police officer that will take away your camera thinking it's part of an Al Qaeda data gathering plot. Other than that, I never had any real fear of The Man, some men in black monitoring my every keystroke on the internet going to rendition me because I casually read the Anarchist Cookbook and School of the Americas manuals from the internet. The government doesn't scare me, you'd have to be some libertarian right wing nut that thinks the government is gonna take away your guns to put you in a FEMA death camp to fear the government. Having moved to southern California and hearing about people who get shot by the police it kind of has me worried that any day could come where some random dickhead cop looking for an excuse to shoot somebody will find it in me; yes, I fear that more than this made up bullshit other people peddle.

I don't know if fear is the right word. But I am concerned about the direction this country is headed regarding our liberty. The federal government is growing too big and they are chipping away at our liberty slowly.

When I was in elementary school in the mid 80's, they used to have people come visit the classrooms and tell us why Russia is bad. "They spy on their citizens, they listen to their phone calls, they read their mail, etc."

I often wonder what those same people would say now.

Not particularly I do fear a reinstatement of a national draft, but while the government as a whole can be detrimental to economics it's unliklely they will come after me personally unless I bread the law which I don't intend to do.

Also I have seen little to nothing being done that infringes on the second ammendment. Nearly everyone is still allowed to own guns with little to no restrictions on just what those guns can do, how many bullets they can hold, nor how many you are allowed to own.

They'd have all sorts of neat little reasons why such survellance is necessary and why it's not the same thing as that the communists were doing.

that's not true in many states. For example, in NYC they can deny you a $500 fire arm permit for running a stop sign, 1 arrest, etc. This is the case in many states.

Fear is a strong word, but I am a little concerned about how much information the government is taking in. I don't think there is manpower to do much with it, beyond looking for terrorist plots.

I'm not naive enough to think that the government hasn't been watching it's citizens for decades.

Ture, but Dick Cheney would do it and laugh the whole time. Probably would give him his final heart attack from excitement.

Syria and Egypt are both odd cases - Syria in particular. I remember reading about all the stuff Assad was doing for the country, and I read (I think it was TIME) the journal article about a reporter who stayed in Assad's house for a few months. He seemed like a relatively normal individual and his family did too. The thing that sticks out in both the cases of Libya and Syria is that the national bank, which has nothing to do with the multinational banking conglomerates, has something like $20 billion in HARD currency from all the oil exports. I'm pretty sure this became common knowledge right around the time Obama started posturing, saying "Syria needs to convert to Democracy or else." A very similar thing happened in the case of Libya. El-Gadhafi wasn't the worst dictator in the world - the man was surprisingly liberal in terms of education, health care, and providing housing for all citizens for instance, but he happened to have about half a billion in gold assets and thus was a demon in the eyes of the west. That gold belongs to THEIR banks, not his or his state's.

Get back to me when the US Government is threatening to execute people for blasphemy like in Pakistan (half of this forum would be on death row) or when military generals are running the government while conscripting new troops at gunpoint.
