If I chew too much Big Red bubble gum it ends up burning the taste buds off my tongue.

no, spicy foods are very good for digestion, and that enhance ur tastebuds. Also thins like cayenne pepper and tumeric powder prevent certain forms of cancer. Also they help regulate blood pressure.

If you eat 5 habanero's per day youre more likely to get stomach or bowel cancer than burnt tastebuds.

I don't think so.  A lot of spicyness can make your taste buds feel like they're burning of course, and you may feel that more than a sweet taste and for a longer time.

What is your medical basis for thinking this? Unless you have ulcers or another pre-existing condition, spicy foods won't harm you.

I have no idea, but does anyone actually like food enough to care? I eat for sustenance not for pleasure, I don't know how you guys are though.

Actually most of taste you get from foods and etc is from your nose :) And if you like chew some gum for a long time in a day the taste in the gum is still there even though you cant taste it, its just because your brain is bored.

actually if i remember correctly the reason why spicy peppers burn so much is because the acid inside of them don't directly link with your taste buds and the acids from the peppers try to force themselves into your taste receptors, thats why it burns sooo much and way to counter act that is to drink milk.....thank you i have just Nerdasize your thread goodbye:|

What is your medical basis for thinking this? Unless you have ulcers or another pre-existing condition, spicy foods won't harm you.

In India they have rampant numbers of people with stomach cancer that was caused by a life of eating spicy food. Too much chili can cause your stomach acid to act up and make stomach ulcers, and also cancer if you eat enough. This would only happen if you ate really spicy food everyday for a couple decades though...

I got suckered into eating a couple weird peppers at an oriental restaurant once and i lost all sense of taste for a few hours.  I imagine if you kept something like that up you might have some issues down the road?

For me, it's just foods that are actually physically hot. They burn my sensitive toungue, so I have to wait about 10 minutes before I eat anything heated up.

No... according to Szechwan cooking, the capsaicin [the acid that causes the burn] opens up your taste buds to new levels of flavour experiences.

After building up a tolerance... I would have to agree.

Yes, it's a proven fact that spicy foods destroy taste buds. That's the cause of the heat and sometimes pain.

All sources indicate no, but it may suppress appetite or taste until you build up a tolerance for it.
