Did you watch MTV growing up?

Just curious if you guys grew up on music videos like I did I really miss that time there where so many cool ones back in the day. MTV was pretty damn good in the 90's for the most part before reality TV destroy that network. Anyways what where your favorite MTV shows and videos back in the day?

I think I missed the best times of MTV having been born in '87.

I didn't watch it much because the content was already starting to trend towards reality TV by the time I started to care about music.

Late 80's was the best, by the 90's they were moving into a different format with the likes of Real World, Road Rules, etc.

120 Minutes was muh show.

Yeah that intro man so much nostalgia.

I started watching MTV for it's music vids while growing up in the 90's as I was getting awareness what MTV is all about before heading to School every mornings. Other then music vids, one really good reason why I love MTV was all about their Cartoons! I'll list the MTV Cartoons I enjoy:

• Beavis and Butt-Head - I'm surprise this wasn't mention here and it was my favorite every mornings. It was the right kind of humor for my age at the time.
• Daria - Daria I like, it was a teenage drama that fit well for me when I was a teenage at the time while it was running and great series for MTV since it was more towards Teens.
• Spider-Man MTV - This series was criminally underrated! The things I really love about this show is the maturity of it. I mean, Spidey's wounds sometimes looked soo severe in this show and the I adore the dark tone in this show so much and that series took place after the first Spider-Man live movie.
• Aeon Flux - A futuristic when sci-fi was still a thing.
• Liquid Television - Always felt like a special event when it came on and had a kick ass dub of The Running Man short from Neo-Tokyo.
• Maxx - Now this was the shits! Maxx always reminded me of The Tick and Spawn at the same time but sadly, it really sucks that this show never got a season 2.
• Celebrity Deathmatch - And you thought YouTube Death Battle did it first? Not even close and as of matter in fact, Celebrity Deathmatch using clay was interesting for it's time and always had WWF Stone Cold Steve Austin as the special guess star.

All in all, MTV cartoons were freaking amazing, it's sad they don't do cartoons anymore but I heard Daria is making a comeback but since I cut the cable years ago, I don't even know if Daria made it back.

I did (mid 90's to [very] early 00's). Real World, Road Rules, that soft core porn show "Undressed" or whatever the hell it was called, the Carson Daly show.

But eventually it grew stale and repetitive and then, I don't know, like in 2007 or so, my cable company had a dispute with them and the channels affiliated with them and they dropped MTV et al.

And I got mad for like 3 seconds and then realized that I didn't watch any of their shows anymore.

And that's that.

I don't really remember the Kurt Loder announced Cobain died, that was slightly before my time, like wasn't watching for music yet.

Like I was the Beavis and Butthead era, so probably was watching by mid-90s.

Ufff, forgot about that show. Definitely into it and part of that golden era for me.

for a time in the 80's when i was young it was interesting. didn't really give a shit about it as i got older in the mid-late 90's

Great list!! Liquid Television was so cool and unique especially for it's time I still love that intro.

Well I turned 19 in August 1980 so you can bet I watched MTV when they played videos and were at their best.

Not really. Growing up we only had TV in the living room and my parents aren't really into English music, so it was never a channel we would choose.

The only MTV show I've heard of is Pimp My Ride.

Twelve year old me and my best friend used to watch Headbangers Ball every weekend. Heard a lot of bands for the first time on that show.

Didn't really watch MTV until I got hooked on The Challenge around 2007.

Yes, Beavis And Butthead were popular along with Celebrity Death Match.

Nope, being born after it´s hayday made it moot and growing up there was so much else.

I think you need to be from the early 80´s late 70´s to have grown up with MTV in its glory days.

MTV was really damn good up to say 97 then the boyband and Britney Spears crap started and it's been downhill ever since.

Yeah. Watched it through to the mid-2000s when the went full-all-in on reality TV. Once they stopped supporting MTV2 (which still plays music videos occasionally), I dropped them.

However, I do still catch Ridiculousness.

For Jackass and those shows. Now they put out disgusting SJW content.

OMG These two are the best! I've rewatched Daria recently, still on top!

Huh? I'm not a fan of their current programming, but I don't see much SJW stuff.

Must just be their YouTube wing. They put out the best social justice video ever... resolutions for white guys.

I remember watching MTV when it first aired. Somewhere around 1980-82. I was staying at a friends house and I stayed up all night watching music videos. Some of the first videos I remember seeing were Sammy Hagar I can't drive 55 and Cindi Lauper She Bop. Even my grandparents watched MTV in the early 80's.

Yeah, I did. And this was like 25+ years ago, when they played music videos and Beavis and Butthead.

It might shock some people, but MTV used to be a good channel.

Even VH1 played music videos, though it was more old person music like Celine Dion and Paul Gabriel and junk.

Yeah, a little bit. It wasn't my main jam, but it was a great way to discover a lot of new music, get interviews and such in a video format. It was crazy just how groundbreaking it felt. Even lot of their shows like Bevis and Butthead, Daria, Celebrity Death Match, and even Real World broke new ground targeting teens and young adults. Haven't watched in years though, I know it has definitely changed, but it seems like it was still popular with the kids 5-10 years ago when everyone was talking about all their reality shows and such.

Yeah, it used to be such a good source of entertainment with a huge variety in programming.

Yeah, some of my first videos I remember were Duran Durans "Girls on Film", Peter Schilling's "Major Tom" (remember that one? "4,3,2,1, Earth below us...."), and Bryan Adams "This Time" and "Cuts like a Knife", the latter of which has personal meaning for me after a messy breakup with a girl friend. Loved the 1980's! Far better than the way things are now, and MTV at the top of their game.

Nope, it was banned in Canada unless you had a satellite dish to bootleg the channel. Our youth was force fed MuchMusic which tried to copy the MTV formula, but with a tenth of the budget and an equal amount of effort. It was garbage. Is it even on the air anymore? Who knows. Who cares.
