In the pre-soviet era, the Russian Empire was one of the United States' biggest supporters?
During the Revolutionary war, Britain made multiple attempts to get the Russians to send troops to America to help quell the rebellion. But Catherine the Great saw better opportunity for trade with an independent American nation, and made an official declaration of neutrality. However, while officially neutral, Russia continued to make major trade with the colonists, ensuring economic stability.
In fact, the British even made a desperate plea to offer territory to Russia in exhange for military aid, to which Catherine refused and eventually published the act of desperation to the other great powers at the time. This was a major embarassment to Britain and badly damaged their reputation on the international scene.
Once the war was over and American independence was attained, Russia was one of the first countries alongside France to recognize the United States as a nation. Trade flourished, as both Russia and the US were vast lands full of resources, eagerly doing business with one another.
