Did animal activists make movies worse?

Just watched Conan the Barbarian again. Horses were sent crashing to the ground. Fairly common in those older movies. I can't even remember any new movie that has animals performing stunts. I bet even believable CG would make people lose their minds. That scene in Apocalypse Now done today might get the director murdered. I don't think there's a difference between pets or riding animals and cattle. Seems really hypocritical to treat some animals like shit (meat farms) and fume with rage over the maltreatment of others. They're all intelligent.

But they're not my kin.

It enforced people not to be cruel to animals?

Like, when I watch movies, watching a horse break it's legs isn't exactly entertainment.

Disagree.

Without the horses dropping, you'd just have Indians Native Americans falling down. Not as dramatic. Like a car chase without any crashes. The drivers just pass out. Besides, why would you shoot at the Indian and not at the bigger mass he is riding to chase you?

Like I said, not my kin.

I believe this is where the conversion ends.

Animal cruelty can only make a movie worse and more deplorable.
I for one am glad it's out of trend as it should have been ages ago.

The A.N. scene isn't nearly as cut and dry as the O.P. suggests in regards to animal cruelty in film.

But I see so many people bothered by it. Comes up in the Blu-ray.com Apocalypse Now thread every couple of months. Highly doubt a big Hollywood movie would ever get away with that now. Even though cows in meat farms are far worse off than this one that lived in the jungle.

I don't agree CG can't substitute for making stunts with real animals. The battle for Minas Tirith in Lord of the Rings: Return of the King is a great example of when CG works well and imo the only way to visualise it.

I'm no animal rights activist but I'm in favor of using CGI to substitute for actually hurting animals.

I'm still pissed they didn't use real dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, ruined the entire movie for me.

Nothing justifies animal cruelty. If there is a safer way to make a movie that depicts animals getting hurt without actually hurting real animals then we should definitely use it. Like CGI. I get that we kill animals like cows on a daily basis but that's for food, not entertainment.

I thought, and I think, that nowadays in movies animals are not so much mocked. I would say that they are even cared for and very well.

Due to the changing landscape of the world, I think the use of animals doing stunts in movies has largely become a relic of old cinema.

My biggest issue is when CGI is lazily placed over things that could have otherwise been practical set-pieces.

All living creatures deserve a certain amount of dignity and respect. Freedom from pain, torture, and other serious abuses.

I'm no vegetarian but these rules do exist in ranches and slaughterhouses; while occasional abuses do occur, for the most part these animals do not suffer. They're fed, kept healthy, and are ultimately slaughtered with little to no pain.

Abusing and killing animals either for entertainment or as a result of entertainment is sadistic imo and should not be done. If you object to CGI, then just find another way to do it.

Pretty much.

My general belief is that animals should be rewarded for not being human lol.

Anyone can hurt or kill that which can't fight back. It doesn't take a man to do that BUT I will say I didn't shed a tear during Kingdom of the Spiders.

The industry doesn't need to cater to people who gain enjoyment of animals getting hurt.

So because we eat animals, we should be okay with torturing and maiming them for our entertainment? Yeah, that just makes you a piece of shit.

You don't have to eat meat. There are plenty of other ways to get your required sustenance. You eat it simply because you want to. Like entertainment, it's optional. But you think one is evil and the other isn't. Stop being so hypocritical. Why don't you start a human meat farming movement if you think using the meat and milk makes the slavery, drugging, forced milking, maiming and slaughter okay? Honestly, I'd rather be killed for a movie than live the way those processed farm animals do. I'd be just as useful to humans.

@ezekiel43: If you think eating animals for sustenance and torturing them for entertainment are the same thing, then you're a moron. You're also the same guy that defends a grown man having sleepovers with 10 year old boys, so really not surprising that you would have shit opinions and standards. I'm starting to see why women want nothing to do with you.

Both optional. You do it simply because you want to. So yes, same thing. I could at least respect your opinion if you killed all your own food.

Because I don't believe a poorly made documentary whose director was revealed by friends and contradictory recordings and transcripts to be a liar. Michael Jackson was found innocent by the law, which says more than your unsubstantiated hearsay. It is strange to sleep with boys, but sleeping isn't sex.

That would be strange, because I barely even talk about myself or share these opinions with anyone in real life. Can't really hate me if I'm invisible. Dick.

It's one thing to kill animals for sustenance and another for entertainment. Sure you could easily argue that conditions should be improved for animals on farms/slaughterhouses, in general. They are living creatures after all. But killing animals for entertainment is completely unnecessary and wasteful. We've evolved to eat meat. It's a fact. If you don't want to fine, enjoy your beans, protein bars, supplements or medications that prevent you from withering away.

You can look at it from a hunting perspective as well. You have hunters that kill animals for food. And you have rich assholes that hunt animals for their heads so they can display it on their walls. There are poachers that go after specific organs from animals and even sometimes remove them while the animal is still alive. One is out of necessity and the other is for profit, beliefs, cruelty and is just plain disrespectful.

It's not out of necessity, though. Most people don't have to eat meat to survive. Maybe if you're poor or live in the wild or somewhere remote and desolate. But people here? I don't think so. You said yourself that you can eat food that doesn't taste good if killing animals really bothers you.

You can usually tell a CG creature is computer-generated. Those scenes add to the authenticity of the movie and are captured forever, so I don't see how it is wasteful.
