Anyone else hyped for it? I was worried it wasn't going to happen because Blade Runner 2049 flopped but I guess it is actually being made and coming out in 2020.

It's not even that I love Dune the book that much. I read it once when I was in my mid teens, and never really thought about it much since then. Still, though big budget films featuring exotic sci fi by a competent filmmaker like Denisdon't come along very often.

That's one of the reasons I'm still so obsessed with 2049 because it was the perfectly realized cyberpunk movie I wanted for years. Hopefully Dune will be the exotic alien world that I've always to experience.

@volsung: I'm interested. They are casting some good actors.

I don't think Dune is a book that translates well to film. But I like the people they have involved with this project so far. It may end up a good film as long as you don't compare it too the book too much.

I'm looking forward to it, yes, but Dune is hard material to adapt imo. The 1980's movie was just...awful. Did so many things wrong. Sci-Fi Channel made their adaptation, which was actually fairly decent, but suffered from low production values (it helps to view it as a play and less as a mini-series).

Villeneuve has made some incredible movies of late--Bladerunner 2049, Arrival, and Sicario--that are both highly entertaining, but also intellectually stimulating.

How is Blade Runner 2049 a flop? The movie was incredible.

Or do you mean sales-wise?

@mrbojangles25: Blade Runner 2049 underperformed at the box office which is odd as the movie was pretty amazing. I guess the audience went in expecting an action movie and Blade Runner (both the original and the sequel) is not.

As for Dune, the fact that Denis Villeneuve is involved definitely increases my interest. I may pick up the book since I've heard that it's a classic.

I mean box office. Obviously it was one of the better sci fi films. Certainly the prettiest.

I just hate how almost anything can be done in 2019 but we pretty much never get anything cool and exotic.

Instead next week we'll get to see the same superhero movie we've already seen 20 times.

It's a sin that Deakins isn't doing the cinematography though. Or at least I don't think he is.

Looking forward to it since I really liked the 80s movie and the book.

I read 3 books into the Dune series and the 80s movie is something I can watch often.

I don't care if BR2049 flopped financially, because it was a hit critically and a great movie. It's way better than all of those generic comic book movies that have insane box office.

He is a good director and this will probably be a good movie.

You should, if you want more movies like it as opposed to more Marvel and Star Wars. There's lots of "adult" sci-fi that could be adapted. And maybe someday we'll get some original screenplays too.

Apparently James Cameron and Liu Cixin met recently. Imagine a The Three Body Problem movie. Or would that even be any good?
