Been wanting to make this thread for awhile so here goes:

Many times I have heard in this life "Violence is never the answer", So today I ask you OT what do you think about the quote. Do you really believethat this is true or on most occasions you can see violence being used to end the problem sooner?

Non-violence solutions can be seen in histroy. The most recent is the peaceful protest in Egypt which have proved to work. But in Libya it is completely opposite, we see people fighting and a war against their own people. Loyalists vs Seperatists, The military vs The people.

My opinion? I believe can be answered in my favorite quote "Violence is never the answer, but it is a solution"

So OT, I ask you: Is violence ever the answer?

and WWII to stop the destruction of the Nazis and the Japanese.

Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. There are people who think that it is the appropriate answer when it isn't and vice-versa.

There's a quote in the office of one my college professors he put on the American flag:

"Other than Communism, Dictatorship, Monarchy, and Nazism...war has solved absolutely nothing!"

Sometimes, like stopping the Nazis in WW2, sometimes its the only way. It is a neccesary evil.

Not if there's an alternative, but sometimes, yes. Some people just don't react to anything other than having their head kicked in - not that I've ever been one to get through to people like that anyway...

Sometimes, yeah, if some guy's trying to rob me I'm not gonna try to convince him by reading this great poem on peace.

Yes, it is a sad reality but it's the truth. Diplomacy and words should always be utilized first, but if all else fails, sometimes force is the only means of resolving a conflict.

Sure it is. Pacifism is an idealistic laughing stock. Even Gandhi admitted that at a certain point picking up arms and fighting is preferable to just laying down and getting slaughtered.

Yes. It's called self defense. If someone is trying to harm me and I can stop it using physical force, then I will.

I think it could be a solution to get people to back off if it is a one on one thing. Only to be used wisely, I guess? As for countries... maybe they shouldn't just jump to violence so quickly since more people get killed that way but then again... what do I know?

I believe that violence is sometimes the only answer and should only be used as a last resort. For example, no matter how much you try to convince some people to back off with words they are just too stupid to understand and all they need is a good beating.

Sometimes. More oftne it is responding to other violence, but sometimes it is the only way to get things done on this sad little planet of ours...

I'm involved in a sort of debate. I will do no harm to them but I promise something will be cut up with a chainsaw.

Sometimes it can be and it is so very sweet.

Violence is only the answer once all other possibilities has been tried out and deemed ineffective. Brain over brawn, as they say.

Since the question is "Is violence EVER the answer?" having both "yes" and "sometimes" as options seems redundant. But yes, violence is sometimes the answer whether it's a good thing or not.

I don't believe I've ever run into a total pacifist on this forum. Violence seems to be a part of the natural world. Everything is predatory in some form or another.

Force and the threat of force create orderly society. People complain about the police acting improperly, but I think most of us like the idea of having someone to call if a crazy person breaks into our home (and some of us like the idea of being able to stop that crazy person ourselves). People like to complain about the military too, but I've only met one person here who said he doesn't care if the military were entirely disbanded.

Since the question is "Is violence EVER the answer?" having both "yes" and "sometimes" as options seems redundant.

Radiatedrich91

Heh, I thought the same thing, so I said "Yes."

I think that most people think of violence very literally, like punching or shooting or something like that. But really we need to look at the urge to violence and how that is manifested. I think violence is the urge to bring all the rest of the world under your control, to have dominion over that which is not yours. and I think that we are all deeply violent and that that is in our nature and that the best people help others to resist this urge. I don't know. I've been thinking a lot about violence since I finished Blood Meridian over spring break, which is really one of the best books ever very easily and by far the most concerned with violence of any book I've ever read.

Well there are lots of situations where this changes. I was thinking of a situation like in WW2 where, if one side is attempting domination, you need to react with violence to defy it. Successful communication entails many other things like respect, commitment, and compromise.

Most people would be shocked to realize how many problems have been solved, very effectivley I might add, through violence...

Not every situation calls for it, but sometimes violence is the only answer... its in our nature, and as anaturally violent spieces, we respond to it...

My opinion? I believe can be answered in my favorite quote "Violence is never the answer, but it is a solution"

So OT, I ask you: Is violence ever the answer?

MgamerBD

I could be wrong, but I think that my opinion is sort of just a variation of what you just said. I'd personally say, "Violence might not always be the best answer, but it's an answer."

Anyway, unless I misinterpreted what you were saying, I think that those are just two different ways of saying the same thing.

Yeah, same difference. In my eyes I believe we shouldn't have to use violence at all. But unfortunatly that is not how the world works so it is necessary. You hit the nail on the head.

Violence is normally the most efficient, quick and effective way to deal with a problem (where applicable). Though, sometimes its really not worth it.

Violence is one of many potential solutions to a problem or conflict. So in that respect, yes, violence can be the answer. There are always alternatives if violence is found to be less than desirable.

That's the regular stuff, eh?:P

Well, if a bully is harassing/attacking someone, fighting back could potentially end the problem...but what if the bullydecides to hide outside their house with his big dumb bully friends and pummels the kid with a sack of valencia oranges because he decided to fight back? That's not solving anything.

...Not that that would ever happen, though.

Tell him off, then if he doesn't listen kick the *** outa him. Only way to deal with a bully unless you want to get bullied more, in which case go cry to a teacher. Honestly there's rarely a time when something needs violence to be resolved. If it's a simple matter of someone disagreeing, explain your side, have a discussion, if you can't resolve the dispute, then ignore it. However there are times when idiots/countries decide they're going to take a violent approach. In which case you have to respond with the appropriate violence.

Violence can be the answer. For e.g. There are some Teenagers who want to beat me up because I am a nerd. I will not cover like a whimp and chooce non-violent. So I choose the correct response. Physically fight them and win.
