Hanks by a country mile.

Then probably Norton, Bale, Damon and Di Caprio.

My top 5 would probably be:

De Niro

Pacino

Ford

Hanks

Jackson

Definitely not Christian Bale... I just can't get past his Batman voice. Obvious choice is Tom Hanks.

Cristian Bale, the extent he goes to in some of his roles is extreme. But all of them have given great performances.

Norton. He's fond of interesting roles, and I find him to do a great job with them. A racist neo-nazi in American History X, the leprotic masked King of Jerusalem in Kingdom Of Heaven (at least the Director's Cut, the real version of the film that Fox didn't fvck up), a magician in The Illusionist, a man with split personality disorder in Fight Club...the list goes on.

Tom Hanks is a bit too dull for me. I haven't seen most of his early films but his later films were extremely dull (as was his acting in them). Castaway was sub-mediocre and felt very forced, Saving Private Ryan was good but I thought everything about the film paled in comparison to The Thin Red Line, and the whole DaVinci Code series was absolutely awful on all fronts.

Christian Bale is a great actor and honestly I'd take him over Hanks. He was great in American Psycho, The Fighter, and he's alright in Batman. His Batman voice is so stupid though I can't take it seriously.

Matt Damon has a few great films as well and he is a spectacular actor when he tries to be. However I haven't seen most of his films (other than Bourne, Oceans, select few others) so I can't really comment.

Leonardo DiCaprio is alright too. I'd put him on the same tier as Matt Damon. He has his share of mediocre melodramatic films though. Although he works great with certain directors.

3. Harrison Ford

4. Di Caprio

5. Brad Pit

My favorites, in no particular order:

Leonardo DiCaprio

Tom Hanks

Matt Damon

Will Smith

Christian Bale is my favourite actor ever... his roles in Equilibrium, The Machinist, American Psycho, Harsh Times and Batman are all super awesome and talented, he is also one of the few that can actually adopt physically to his roles by manipulating his body weigh for example.

But yea Equilibrium is one of my most favourite movies ever, other movies that I really like are Fight Club, V for Vendetta, Blade Runner, Immortel, Alien series, Prometheus, Dark City (as you might already figured it out... I'm a sci-fi fan)

I was amazed by Bale's performance in The Machinist.

But generally speaking I really don't have "favorite" actors, or I just don't pay much attention as long as the movie/series is enjoyable enough. Heck I mostly watch a work without knowing the names of the vast majority of leading actors involved. However, on the rare occasion I become exceptionally fascinated by an actor due to a certain role he/she played in a certain work. Its because I feel the exceptional authenticity the actor demonstrated in that role and that he/she actually relates immensely to the role, he/she is largely one with it. There are only a handful of such occurrences, Hugh Lauri in House being at the very top of them.

From the list...DiCaprio

plus

Gary Oldman, Vigo Mortensen, Daniel day lewis.

I like actors who can shine in differing genres and vastly different roles. I think all the above have done so with great success.

  • Phillip Seymour Hoffman (oh wait)
  • Sean Penn
  • Meryl Streep

Of the one you mentioned, I prefer guys with range like Norton. I love the psychical transformations that Bale does. Leo knows how to pick scripts. Damon has started doing lefty crap so the quality of the movies he has participated has diminish. Hanks is pretty much Hanks in all his roles but we love Hanks.

Bale : can act, good looking and very versatile

Norton : can act as a loser, but too nerdy for action or romantic role

Dicaprio : Ugly, Ugly, Ugly ..... and the luckiest ugly holywood actor

Edward Norton and Christian Bale are both way better than Leo. Leo is awful with accents (The Departed), he likes to shout unconvincingly a lot, and he has a baby face. He has friends in high places but Edward Norton and Christian Bale are absolute masters of their craft.

Out of the list? Edward Norton. Always enjoyed his work. Christian Bale is talented but I'm not as big a fan (at least of his Batman work, American Psycho and The Machinist on the other hand, that's outstanding).

Overall? Anthony Hopkins by a country mile.

I don't believe an actor can be more talented than others in the same tier.

You're either a good actor or a bad actor, you can't be 95% good actor.

I'd expect the same quality in performance between those 3.

In the end, actors are just lucky, a guy who strikes a lead role in a extremely successful film will be hailed as a "great actor", one who gets a bad role will most likely be called crap.

Look at Natalie Portman, everyone started loving her after the black swan, when she performs with the exact same quality in every other film role she had.

And look at Nic Cage, guy had some pretty damn good films in the past, but since he has been only doing crap lately, everyone says he is a bad actor.

In today's world -- Bale, DiCaprio, Norton.

Edward Norton has the potential to at the top of the list, but he's such a pain in the ass to work with, it's costing him higher profile roles that would probably have him a shelf of Oscars by now.

How do you know he is a pain in the ass to work with?

It's pretty common to have some directors hating the actors and viceversa, but that doesn't mean it happens on every film they make, some people just clash.

Take Sean Connery for example, the guy hated the guts from the league of extraordinary gentlemen director, and viceversa, yet he is known as a good guy to work with.

Now look at Lindsay Lohan, it was universally agreed that she was terrible in that regard

@lightleggy: It's a pretty widely known thing in Hollywood that Norton can be a royal pain in the ass on set. It's mainly because he's obsessive about his acting and insists on doing things so many times it borders on insanity. You can argue that's a good thing, but it costs something like 10,000$ an hour to run a big, Hollywood set, so people aren't terribly keen on taking longer than they need to.
