Well I am from Chicago and I was wondering if we have an accent? Because I think we sound pretty normal. People from Minnesota, Boston, most of the south all have accents but we seem to talk normally. Anyone out there not from Chicago agree with me, or do we sound weird?

My old roomie from southerin Illinois used to complain about the Chicago accent she was getting from living with me. I of course didn't know what she was talking about, but she insisted we talk differently.

This is kind of off, but I was in Chicago one time and I was at a little fast food place and ordered a Mountain Dew from the spicket and when I drank it, I thought it tasted kind of weird, like if the Mountain Dew in Chicago tasted different from the mountain dews elsewhere.

So, it's kind of like an accent, except it has to do with pop. Does anyone see the analogy?

Yes, this kind of thing is common. I noticed it with Coke.

Yes, everyone has some accent, usually dependent upon their locale. I believe the central US around NB, KS, IL, and MO are generally accepted as having a less pronounced more neutral accent than say Austin, TX, NY NY, or Madison WI, but there is still a unique accent there. I worked in network administration for a US wide healthcare company and after talking to people enough, it's pretty easy to guess what section of the country they're from.

Chicago has a very nasally accent, it is like nails on a chalkboard, that being said I have a stereotypical nasal Midwest accent.

I'm from Chicago and I have an accent, but how thick it is varies.

Nobody is free from an accent... but the "weirdness" of your accent depends on who's listening.

My wife was asked once about her accent because she said "pop" instead of "soda". Most people here in Arizona speak like we do, but there are some words that sound different.

Chicagoans do have an accent of sorts, but it's not a heavy one so to speak. I rarely hear people with that accent nowadays.

I live in California now but I was born and raised in Boston. Chicago has an accent but it isn't as thick as mine :-)

I live near Chicago too, and I don't think I have an accent...but I've had quite a few people (who live in other areas) tell me I have a "really heavy" Chicago accent.
