So i currently live in the U.K and drive a V reg peugeot 206 GLX 1.4 and with city driving struggle to get 35miles to a tenner. About 20mpg.

I was wondering what you guys thought would be a more fuel efficient car in a low insurance group (im 17). However style DOES matter and wouldnt want anything lower that a 1.2, 1.4 if its a diesel. Also preferably has to be below £3000 any ideas?

You're young, you shouldn't be caring about gas mileage until you actually have to travel to work. My mate has recently bought a Peugeot 207 1.6 and it has great mileage. Before that he had a Fiesta Zetec S and that was good on mileage too, especially since our UK fuel prices are ridiculous.

When I turned 16 I got a moped and then at 17 I got a 125, I never thought having a car would benefit me as £5 got me over 100miles. I decided to get a full bike licence and I don't really want to get a car yet as they're just too expensive to maintain. Insurance for teens on cars is a horrible amount of money.

I do have to drive to school, work on an evening and football on a weekend. Contrary to what you may say milaege means alot as i want to save as much money as possible to fund going into town on a weekend and buying clothes.

I had a moped and decided due to weather in England i would prefer a car, i was actually just looking at a 3dr Fiesta 1.4, about 35to gallon.

Here in the US, I have an '09 Hyundai Accent that I only paid $12,000 (GBP 7,417) for new but the insurance rates are what kills me the most, the gas mileage is pretty good (1.6L 4 cylinder engine, 4 speed automatic, about 34MPG or 6.92 L/100KM) but I pay $2200 (GBP 1,363) a year on the insurance. And is it true most cars in the UK have manual transmissions? We don't have many of those here, and we don't have any diesel fueled cars, I've only ever seen one diesel car in my whole life.

Yeah, i couldnt drive an automatic, i like the feeling of revving just too much and the car screaming at you before you change up.. (granted this doesnt help fuel consumption) My insurance cost me £3.4k.

Ive seen a few nice 3dr Fiestas that promise around 42mpg so i think im going to look at them, thanks for help tho everyone.

I drive a Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 - I've done 318 miles so far and I'm down to the last notch on the tank - reckon I'll get to 350 / 400 before light shows. Cost about 50 quid to fill up. 1.4 must be mighty high on your insurance! I'd suggest downgrading to a Micra, Corsa or Clio :)

They either have tons of experience, drive a low insurance car or are fronting. My insurance cost me 1,500 (I'm 19, female, first year of driving).

My mate was given his parent's mini and his insurance cost 4k a year.

Also TC, did you put somebody as a named driver on your policy?

Making your parents insure the car and putting you as a named driver is fronting which is illegal, but if you do it the other way around it isn't, and cut my insurance quotes by half.

Yeah i have put my mother on as a named driver, and tbh female insurance is slightly cheaper than males. & to previous message im not being ripped off thats the prices these days when your 17 male, driving a 1.4 with full electrics, alloys, tinted windows etc. Insurance insn't a major worry, its mainly mpg tbh.

Fair enough, I think it's a stupid choice for a first car (why bother with alloys and tinted windows unless you're a chav?) but hey...

Fronting is illegal though it's done by almost everyone. :P At 17 he got insured on a Fiesta Zetec S for £1,300, now he has a 207 1.6 and he's 20, paying £700 PA. It also depends on the area you live.
