Poll Can A Black Person Be A Racist? (134 votes)

Yes 93%
No 7%

Lets take this one on right know. It doesn't need to be black, it can be of another race. Can a person person, regardless of its race, be a racist? I do believe a person, regardless of its race, can be a racist. What say you OT?

I guess black people can be racist, but I think it's a different kind of racism.

Honestly I think resentment is a better word to describe it.

Racism refers to systematized discrimination that is imbued within the power structure of a society, so no. I feel the hangup here is on the word "racism" and not on that distinction itself. If it helps you to use a different word to distinguish between systematized discrimination and other forms of racial discrimination I have nor problem with that, I do have a problem with the distinction getting lost because of semantics.

Nah, you are trying to frame the argument on your grounds. I reject your definition of racism.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/racism

  1. a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
  2. racial prejudice or discrimination

They can only be called racist if they do something racist in an African country. Other than that, it doesn't count. The world is in debt to black people so everyone is just gonna have to deal with blacks being able to play the race card to their advantage.

What if this hypothetical black person lives in an area where they are top of the social order? (like in some African country)

well I put yes because racism is just a form of discrimination; but I've always hated the term race when applied to the people of this planet. We're all members of the human race, we're just diverse in the way we look and our various cultures. In a few more generations hopefully all the bigots will die off.

A black man shouts racial slurs at a Chinese Man, that's raciest, there are many more examples humans can be raciest regardless of race.

I've seen more black people being racist then I see any other race doing so. I've seen many using racial slurs, accusing others of being racist because they aren't getting special treatment for being black, etc. These things are just as racist as things that members of other races do.

Oh yes. I lived in a duplex and my neighbor was a middle aged black man and one of the biggest racists I have ever met. Sometimes he was ok but others he would call me white boy and he kill a white boy if he crossed him and whatnot. He called me and my parents a bunch a racists because we didn't buy used tires from him. Every chance he got to play race card he did. Then other times he said I was best neighbor he had. Maybe it's cause I just ignored his racist rants instead off fighting with him.

That's not quite the definition of racism....seems you made up your own definition to fit your bias. And yes....anyone of any race can be racist.

Because this site sucks. You used to be able to write the title of a thread and the question of a poll separately (you can't do that anymore, I forgot, my bad). You know what we used to be able to do too? Edit the title of a thread which included a poll (and which I tried to do because I agree with the point that I think you are trying to get to that it might look this thread singles out blacks/African Americans) but you can't do that either anymore.

Poverty and lack of education are generally correlated with racism I assume. And black people are generally poorer and less educated than average. That's what I base my guess on.

I watched a Louie Theroux documentary not too long ago where he interviewed a bunch of different black political leaders in Harlem and at one point he interviewed these Black Israelites and they said some pretty interesting things that I hadn't known before.

Apparently Beethoven, Mozart and Shakespeare were black and Abraham Lincoln's blackness is "under review"

Definitely not. I'm wouldn't be surprised if I was wrong. There are so many variables to take into account. I haven't done any research on this whatsoever and that's why I am only guessing, based on one assumption.

Can black people be racist?

like racist to wards other balck people or racist towards others (whites, hispanic, other nationalities and races)?

the answer is yes they can and yes they are.

I know plenty of black people who hate white people. I know black people who hate light skinned blacks and even just regular dark tone black people.

Of course they can be racist....kind of a dumb question, the reason why the poll is so lopsided.

Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown is another, though he has more reason to be so than the younger gents. But man he bragged about hooking up with white chicks to show he beat up on whitey.

I think you're racist for even asking this question.

You can tell the person asking it must have some ignorant falsehoods about racial insensitivity and public speaking.

I have run into quite a few black people who I would consider prejudice, I think people misinterpret the word racist... it involves systematic acts that hold a certain race down and give them a disadvantage: like a business that only hires a certain race. Actually yes it is possible if an african country discriminates against whites and only hires blacks, or any race.

no, a racist is just someone who is prejudiced/discriminatory based on race

from OED

racist: An advocate or supporter of racism; a person whose words or actions display racial prejudice or discrimination.

Racism: The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races. Hence: prejudice and antagonism towards people of other races,

Of course a black person (or other minority) can be a racist. How is this even a serious question?
